Fjord 39XP Yacht Review

A Fjord does not raise its voice to make its point. At twelve metres, the 39 XP reaches 36 knots and holds a cruise of 23, numbers that put her near the top of her class without a hint of drama at the helm. Patrick Banfield drew her deep V hull and chines, built over foam coring at Fjord’s own yard, a construction method that keeps weight down and stiffness up. The result is a dayboat that planes early and corrects through turns with the kind of control normally reserved for larger, heavier hulls. Two cabins sleep four, a single crew berth covers a full season of charter days, and at 400,000 euros new she undercuts much of the field at this performance level. For an owner who wants genuine speed without stepping up to a bigger, costlier platform, the 39 XP makes a direct and convincing case.
Performance

Thirty six knots at the top, twenty three at a settled cruise. The 39 XP earns both without strain.

Twin Volvo Penta D6-440 engines come as standard, with D6-370 and D6-480 options either side for owners who want to tune the balance of economy and outright speed. The deep V hull, drawn by Patrick Banfield, carries hard chines and twin strakes that bite into a turn and settle quickly once she is back on a straight line. A 1.1 metre draught keeps her out of trouble in skinnier anchorages, and 900 litres of fuel give a genuine 400 nautical mile range at cruise, enough for a proper coastal passage without a tank top up.

Exterior Design

Plumb bow, slab sided flanks, and a single level deck that runs clean from bow to stern.

Banfield’s exterior work favours function over decoration: tall bulwarks with teak capping and recessed handrails keep the side decks secure at speed, while deep gutters around the deck hatches do the unglamorous job of keeping water out rather than just looking good. The hardtop is built in heavyweight fibreglass rather than canvas, giving genuine shelter rather than a fair weather gesture. Multiple layout configurations are available for the cockpit and bow, so an owner can specify the 39 XP as a day boat built for entertaining or one built around fishing and watersports, without changing the hull beneath her.

Interior & Accommodation

Two cabins and four berths, scaled to match a boat built primarily to be driven.

The forward cabin carries genuine standing headroom, an improvement Fjord has made a priority across the range, with a separate shower compartment and electric head finished to the same standard as the deck above. A second berth aft covers two further guests or a watch rotation on longer passages. Storage is worked hard throughout, with multiple compartments built into the cockpit and helm console rather than left to chance. One crew berth is enough to keep a 39 XP genuinely owner operable, or lightly crewed for a season of charter.

On Board

The cockpit is built around movement, not just seating.

A transverse wet bar sits amidships, a central dinette converts for dining or lounging, and sunbeds fore and aft bookend the layout so guests are never far from open air. Fjord’s engineering team has resisted hydraulic platforms and drop down bulwarks in favour of weight saving, part of why the 39 XP carries her speed so comfortably. The helm sits forward with a clear sightline and room for three abreast, keeping the person driving close to the guests rather than tucked away at a separate console.

Ownership & Specification

A performance day boat priced well inside the quarter million euro premium bracket.

At 400,000 euros new, the 39 XP measures 12 metres LOA on a 4 metre beam, with an 8 tonne displacement and a 1.1 metre draught. Patrick Banfield handled both naval architecture and exterior design, Fjord’s own team finished the interior, and Fjord Engineering built the platform beneath all of it, a combination that has defined the yard’s recent model line. Twin Volvo Penta power, a 400 nautical mile range and a single crew cabin make her as practical for a hands on owner as she is quick for a Saturday run across open water. For a buyer chasing genuine pace in a manageable size, the 39 XP is difficult to beat on value.
