Thirty six knots is the number, but the ease of reaching it is the real story.
Twin Volvo Penta IPS 500 pod drives are standard, with IPS 600 and IPS 650 available for owners who want a faster cruise. She settles at 26 knots without effort, and the throttle response through the IPS system is close to instant, with none of the lag that can make close quarters work feel tense. A 300 nautical mile range covers a proper coastal run, and a shallow 1.1 metre draught keeps shallower anchorages within reach. Joystick control, standard with the IPS system, turns berthing into routine rather than theatre, even for an owner running the boat without crew.
Patrick Banfield gave her a plumb bow and slab sides, and neither apologises for the other.
The angular profile is deliberate: it reads fast at rest and faster under way. A wide set T-top shades the whole cockpit without closing it in, and generous glazing, both at the topsides and down into the hull, pulls daylight into every part of the boat. It is a look built for open water rather than the marina, though it holds its own there too. The lines carry none of the fussiness that can age a design quickly, which is part of why the 41XL still looks current against newer boats in the class.
A central cabin with close to 1.9 metres of headroom is rare at this length.
The forward double berth anchors the accommodation, with a head and shower compartment to starboard and a flexible bay to port that an owner can set up as storage, a small galley or an additional sofa, depending on how the boat is used. Amidships, a further berth or a storage void fills the space behind the helm, again left to the owner’s choice. Large hull and topside windows keep the cabin bright rather than cave like, so the two cabins aboard feel considerably larger than the boat’s overall length would suggest.
The cockpit resets itself depending on what the day calls for.
Parallel sofas across the stern fold their backrests flat to form a sunbed, or extend a table between them for a proper meal, and the arrangement shifts in minutes rather than requiring tools or a crew member to manage it. Three or four forward facing helm seats keep the social side of the cockpit connected to the driving position rather than separate from it. With day capacity for twelve, the 41XL is built to carry a full boat of guests comfortably, not just technically.
At 550,000 euros new, the 41XL sits as the accessible entry point into Fjord’s open range.
Two cabins and berths for four give her genuine weekend capability, run with a crew of one. Allseas Design handled the naval architecture, Patrick Banfield the exterior and Fjord’s own team the interior, a combination that has proven durable enough for the model to remain in active production years after launch. For an owner moving up from a straightforward day boat but not yet ready for the size and cost of a larger yacht, the 41XL is a considered first step into Fjord ownership.
