South Africa Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in South Africa, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time to charter along the Cape coast?

November through April brings the calmest sailing, once the winter storms of the South Atlantic have passed and the Cape’s summer southeaster, known locally as the Cape Doctor, settles into a steady afternoon pattern rather than the gales of winter. This overlaps only partly with whale season, so many itineraries build in an extra day at Hermanus between June and September if sighting southern right whales close to shore is a priority.

What's the nearest airport for joining a yacht in Cape Town?

Cape Town International Airport, around 20 kilometres from the V&A Waterfront and Royal Cape Yacht Club, handles direct flights from Europe, the Middle East and across Africa. Most charters embark from one of these two marinas, both a short transfer from arrivals. Guests continuing on to the Winelands or a safari extension typically fly back through the same airport, which also serves as the main domestic hub for onward connections within South Africa.

Which anchorage works best depending on the wind?

Cape Town sits on a peninsula between two coastlines, so captains often choose sides based on conditions: the Atlantic seaboard around Hout Bay suits calmer southeasterly days, while Simon’s Town on False Bay offers better shelter when the wind swings northwest in winter. The V&A Waterfront Marina and Royal Cape Yacht Club, both inside Table Bay, remain the most sheltered year-round bases for a Cape Town charter.

How many days should a Cape Town yacht charter last?

Four to five days allow time to combine the city itself, Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront and Robben Island, with a full day in the Winelands and another spent whale-watching or diving off the Cape Peninsula, depending on season. Guests adding a safari extension inland typically build in two or three further days, since even the closest malaria-free reserves involve a couple of hours’ travel each way from the coast.

Can a Cape Town charter be combined with a safari?

Yes, and it’s one of the region’s genuine advantages: several malaria-free private reserves lie within two to four hours of Cape Town by road, including Aquila Private Game Reserve, around 177 kilometres away. Guests can spend the first days of a trip on the water around the Cape Peninsula and Winelands, then transfer inland for a safari before flying home from Cape Town International, all without leaving the region.
