Thirty five knots at the top, a settled 25 at cruise, and the reach to make both count.
The standard twin MAN V8 1000hp engines give the 42 S genuine pace, with Volvo Penta IPS 950 pod drives or Caterpillar C18 diesels offered as alternative packages for owners who want a different handling character. A 1.4 metre draught keeps her out of trouble in shallower water, while 4,000 litres of fuel support a 350 nautical mile range, enough for a proper coastal passage rather than a short hop. Aluminium construction keeps her lighter than an equivalent GRP hull of this size, a genuine advantage at both ends of the speed range.
Her hull narrows forward and opens wide aft, and the whole profile reads as one continuous gesture.
A decked bow and a windscreen that sits barely above the deck line keep the silhouette low and uncluttered, while angular surfacing gives the 42 S a modern, assertive character rather than a soft one. The stern widens into an open bathing platform, a shape that favours both swimming access and a genuinely usable aft terrace. Alium’s own design and engineering team shapes every hull individually around the buyer’s brief, so no two 42 S yachts need share quite the same detailing, even though the underlying line stays consistent across the range.
Push a button, and the cockpit dining table disappears into the floor in under two seconds.
What was a central dining area becomes an open sunbathing platform almost instantly, a genuinely clever piece of engineering rather than a gimmick. Lowering the two aft bulwarks extends the cockpit to six metres wide, a 25 square metre terrace that transforms how the boat is used at anchor. Twin galley blocks, one on each side, carry a sink, a grill, an icemaker and refrigeration, so two groups can prepare food and drinks without crossing paths. Wide gangways lead forward to a sunpad for two or three guests, with a bimini on hand to shade the aft deck when needed.
Eight guests can sleep aboard, and not one of the two cabins feels like an afterthought.
Three steps lead down to a dining area that converts into a double berth, finished with storage, a small galley and an en suite shower room. A second, mid cabin tucks beneath the cockpit. It has no natural light, but its joinery and finish hold up well regardless, so much so that the sense of being aboard an aluminium hull disappears entirely below deck. On deck, the helm sits to starboard with two pilot seats, shielded from the wind by the windscreen and side deflectors, so the person driving stays as comfortable as the guests aft.
No two owners need specify their 42 S the same way.
Alium builds semi-custom from the keel up, with buyers working directly with the yard’s designers and engineers to settle layout, finish and propulsion before the aluminium is even cut. A crew berth for two keeps her workable for lightly staffed ownership, while the standard MAN V8 1000hp engines or the Volvo Penta IPS and Caterpillar C18 alternatives let an owner match the powertrain to how the boat will actually be used. For a buyer drawn to a genuinely bespoke day cruiser built in aluminium rather than GRP, the 42 S makes a considered, distinctive case.
