Light air is where she proves her breeding.
In barely 4 knots of true wind the First 27 holds 2.8 knots upwind, building to 4.5 knots of boat speed as the breeze reaches 6 knots, and six knots upwind in a proper breeze is well within her reach. On a beam reach under her gennaker she tracks wind speed itself rather than falling behind it. The helm stays light throughout, answering sail trim and crew weight with the same immediacy her raceboat ancestry promises, while a fixed keel with a torpedo bulb gives her more stability than her lighter siblings, a deliberate trade that suits a couple sailing shorthanded far more than a full racing crew ever would.
She is a raceboat with the edges softened, not removed.
Sam Manuard’s hull began life drawn purely for speed, and Beneteau’s cruising conversion keeps that lineage visible: a lean, planing capable shape below a shortened aluminium mast carrying a simpler pinhead mainsail. The deep swing keel of her raceboat sisters gives way here to a fixed fin with a torpedo bulb, trading a fraction of upwind pace for a boat that asks nothing of her crew between tacks. On deck, forward facing cockpit benches and a generous lazarette keep the layout simple and the silhouette clean, a small cruiser that still reads unmistakably as a First.
The table moves. The mood does not.
A folding table shifts between the saloon and the cockpit, so a meal can follow the sun rather than the other way round. Forward facing benches keep the crew together and out of the way of working sheets, while a large lazarette swallows fenders, warps and spare sail without eating into the accommodation below. The whole deck is built for a couple sailing shorthanded: nothing here needs an extra pair of hands to manage, which matters as much on a quiet evening at anchor as it does mid passage.
Four berths, arranged for a couple who occasionally bring friends.
A double in the forepeak is the main event, backed up by two settee and quarter berths in the saloon for guests or an off watch crew. A galley to port and an enclosed heads to starboard cover the essentials without pretending to be more than they are, and while standing headroom is not part of the promise on a boat this size, everything below is genuinely usable rather than merely present. It is accommodation built around real weekends afloat, not a brochure photograph.
A proper small cruiser, not a raceboat in disguise.
At 8 metres length overall, 2.5 metres beam and 1,400 kilograms displacement, drawing 2 metres, the First 27 sits comfortably between a dinghy and a proper cruising yacht. A 10 horsepower outboard supplies auxiliary power, 6 knots cruising and 10 at full throttle, with 25 litres of fuel giving around 100 nautical miles of range. Sam Manuard’s naval architecture and Beneteau’s own design team keep hull and interior working to the same brief: an owner who wants to sail properly, cross a channel in decent weather, and come home to a boat that asks little in return.
