Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 54 Yacht Review

The Oceanis Yacht 54 is not the boat her lines suggest. Beneteau took the hull from the First 53 racing yacht, softened nothing structural, and built a genuine Mediterranean cruiser around it. The result feels quicker than her cruising brief implies. Roberto Biscontini kept the long, powerful lines that made the First 53 competitive, while Lorenzo Argento reworked the deck and profile for owners who want comfort rather than podium finishes. Nauta Design’s interior carries that same balance: oak toned joinery and a properly separated forward cabin that would suit a much larger yacht. Three cabins sleep six, with day space for eight and a single crew member aboard, and at close to 600,000 EUR new she sits at a serious price point for a serious hull. For an owner who wants genuine sailing performance without giving up a comfortable cockpit, few 54 footers make as strong a case.
At Sea

She carries a racing hull’s manners under a cruiser’s skin.

The First 53 heritage shows the moment the wind fills in: a sail area to displacement ratio high enough to build speed early and hold it through a beat. Twin rudders keep the helm light and precise even when pressed, though they also mean she gives little warning before she is over canvassed, which rewards an attentive crew. Under power, the standard 110 HP Yanmar saildrive brings her to a comfortable 8 knot cruise and 10 knots at full throttle, with 500 nautical miles of range on 400 litres of fuel. She is, in short, considerably faster than her cruising brief would suggest.

Exterior Design

Every deck decision favours the person actually sailing her.

High bulwarks and genuinely safe side decks let the crew move forward without drama, and the bimini and sprayhood are built into the design rather than fitted on as an afterthought. Twin cockpit tables fold down into sunbeds when the anchor goes down, and a transom door opens onto a proper tender garage rather than a cramped one. Large hull portholes and coachroof glazing bring light below without compromising the deck’s clean, uncluttered profile. Lorenzo Argento has drawn a deck that reads as calm at rest and purposeful underway, which is a harder balance to strike than it looks.

Interior & Accommodation

Below deck, the Oceanis Yacht 54 argues for space over spectacle.

Three cabins sleep six, with the forward suite split cleanly so the heads and shower sit to either side rather than sharing one cramped compartment, a detail that matters on a long charter week. Nauta Design’s oak finishes and radiused, fiddled furniture borrowed from the First 53 keep every surface practical in a following sea as well as handsome at the dock. The galley is built with genuine cooking in mind rather than as a dressing for photographs, and a dedicated chart table to port keeps navigation separate from the saloon’s social space. It is an interior built by people who expect the yacht to actually be sailed.

On Board

The cockpit is where the Oceanis Yacht 54 spends most of her life.

A chaise longue with a knee raise feature turns the cockpit into genuine lounging space rather than just a sailing position, and an onboard control system lets an owner run lighting, tanks and systems from a touchscreen or handheld device without leaving the seat. Stowage runs deep throughout, with lift out sole boards mounted on rubber dampers to cut noise at sea. Combined with the tender garage aft, she is set up for owners who want to arrive somewhere, stay a while, and use the boat as a base as much as a means of getting there.

Ownership & Specification

At close to 600,000 EUR new, the Oceanis Yacht 54 asks a serious question of the yachts around her.

She measures 17.1 metres on a 5 metre beam, displacing 16,800 kilograms with a 2.5 metre draught. Roberto Biscontini’s hull and Lorenzo Argento’s deck and profile are backed by Beneteau’s in house engineering, and Nauta Design’s interior completes a yacht that reads consistently from naval architecture through to the last piece of joinery. One crew member is sufficient to run her day to day. For an owner weighing performance against comfort in the 55 foot bracket, she settles the argument by refusing to choose between them.
