More beam, more speed, the same unshakeable composure.
The standard 90 horsepower Mercury FourStroke EFI carries the 170 Montauk to a cruising speed of 25 knots and a top speed of 35 knots, drawing on a 95 litre fuel tank for a range of around 160 nautical miles. The reshaped hull, with its sharper bow entry and more pronounced keel radius, shows up most clearly under hard use: acceleration is smooth and hesitation free, hard turns bring only a slight inboard roll, and running through another boat’s wake produces no pounding at all. It is a composed, dry ride that rewards an aggressive hand on the wheel just as readily as a cautious one, and it stays that way as the water roughens.
Five extra inches of beam, and a noticeably different attitude on the water.
Boston Whaler widened the 170 Montauk by five inches over earlier versions, a change that reads immediately in a smoother, drier ride rather than in any loss of her traditional profile. The console grew wider and taller alongside it, yet still leaves around half a metre of walkway down each side, so moving forward to the bow never feels cramped. The lines remain unmistakably Montauk: a squared bow, a low sheer and a centre console layout built around sightlines rather than styling for its own sake. It is restraint rather than reinvention, a hull updated exactly where it needed to be and left alone everywhere else.
A helm built for hours, not minutes.
The four position helm seat reverses to face aft for fishing or for keeping an eye on swimmers off the platform, and a cutout beneath the console lets her owner drive standing up in a chop. Instrumentation stays simple: a tachometer, voltmeter and fuel gauge, with room for a nine inch multifunction display when an owner wants one. A separate ignition switch and shutdown lanyard reduce the odds of an accidental cutout, and a grate over the centreline scupper keeps debris from clogging the drain. Aft, four rod holders are built into the transom as standard, with an aerated livewell available in the helm seat itself for anyone fishing seriously rather than occasionally.
The fuel tank moved, and the whole cockpit benefited.
A 25 gallon fuel tank now sits beneath the cockpit deck rather than as a carry on unit, freeing space aft for proper storage and tidying the whole layout at once. The hull and deck are joined through Boston Whaler’s Unibond process, bonded as a single structure with foam filled voids rather than fastened together, which keeps her quiet and solid feeling even as the water builds. Stainless steel fittings throughout resist the marine environment, and a 316 grade specification runs through hardware most owners never think to check. It is the kind of engineering that shows up only in how little attention it demands over the years that follow.
Enough fuel for a proper day, not just a quick run.
With 95 litres of fuel and a best cruise that keeps her efficient at 25 knots, the 170 Montauk offers a working range of around 160 nautical miles, comfortably enough for a full day of fishing, watersports or island hopping with a sensible reserve left in the tank. Rated for seven guests, she carries enough fuel and capacity to make a genuine day boat out of a hull still compact enough to trailer behind an ordinary car. For an owner who wants range without the weight and cost of a larger yacht, or a yacht owner who wants a tender capable of a real excursion rather than a short hop ashore, that balance matters more than outright top speed.
