Under the hood, the 190 Montauk is typically powered by a Mercury 115 FourStroke engine, renowned for its efficiency and reliable performance. This outboard setup not only ensures quick acceleration and impressive top speeds but also promotes ease of maintenance. Offering a maximum speed of around 40 knots, this model is perfect for thrill-seekers and those who appreciate quick jaunts across the water. With a beam of approximately 2.43 meters, the boat offers a stable platform for fishing or relaxing. She cuts rather than crashes through a head sea.
A sharp bow entry, a deep forefoot and topsides that flare well above the waterline let the 190 Montauk knock down spray rather than wear it, and reversed chines and four lifting strakes per side keep her tracking cleanly through a turn. Under hard acceleration the bow rises only slightly, a trait that suits a nervous new driver as much as an experienced one. Standard hydraulic steering keeps the wheel light at any speed, and the 16 degree deadrise at the transom gives a noticeably better ride than the model she replaced. Independent sea trials with the optional 150 horsepower engine recorded a top speed of close to 40 knots, matching Boston Whaler’s own figures almost exactly.
A new bottom and a new bow, the same unmistakable face.
Boston Whaler did not have to remodel the 19 foot Montauk. They did it anyway, reworking the hull from the waterline down while keeping the squared bow, low sheer and centre console layout that have defined the range for decades. The foredeck was raised and widened, creating a casting or lounging platform of more than 23 square feet, framed by a split bow rail and relatively high bulwarks for a boat this size. Beneath the skin, the voids between hull and deck are filled with expandable foam, a construction method Boston Whaler calls the Unsinkable Legend, and the only guarantee in the category that a swamped hull will still float level and support real weight.
Room for eight, built around the four who actually fish.
The cockpit measures close to 20 square feet, with a gunwale height of 19 inches and rails running its full length at 30 inches for genuine security underway. Optional jump seats aft add two rod holders per side and storage beneath each seat base, while a self draining fishbox forward, fitted with a gas strut hatch, doubles as a cooler when fishing is not the plan for the day. A teak swim platform and a three step ladder reaching well below the surface make climbing back aboard straightforward for swimmers and divers alike. Rated to carry eight guests, she is most comfortable with four to six aboard, exactly the range her designers built her around.
Every surface has a second job.
The helm seat reverses for fishing, the console storage tray carries 12 volt and USB power, and an optional T-top adds five rod holders along with more than two metres of overhead clearance for standing guests. A curved acrylic windscreen and a stainless wheel keep the driving position clean and simple, while an optional livewell beneath the helm seat and a 72 quart cooler seat forward turn her into a dedicated fishing platform in minutes rather than hours. Boston Whaler keeps the standard equipment list short and the options list long, which means two owners can configure the same hull for entirely different days on the water.
Fuel capacity that outruns almost everything else her size.
At 227 litres, the 190 Montauk carries more fuel than either smaller Montauk, enough for a genuine 150 nautical mile range at a sensible cruise and real flexibility for a longer offshore run or a full day of towing watersports. The standard 115 horsepower Mercury FourStroke suits cruising and light fishing, while the optional 150 horsepower engine, tested independently to within a fraction of a knot of Boston Whaler’s own figures, adds the authority needed for wakeboarding, skiing or carrying a full complement of guests. A galvanised tandem axle trailer with disc brakes comes as standard, underlining that this is a boat built to be used hard and travelled with just as easily.
