Weather protection does not come at the cost of control on the 86 Enclosed Flybridge.
A wraparound console gives the helm full visibility from inside the enclosed bridge, while a third steering station on the aft deck lets the captain back down on a fish without climbing back up top. A tuna tower rises above it all, carrying teaser reels within easy reach during a spread. Below, the mezzanine cockpit holds comfortable seating, built in livewells, a dedicated fish box and a lazarette for gear, keeping the working deck organised through a long day of fishing.
From a distance, the enclosed bridge changes her silhouette more than it changes her hull.
Beneath the raised, windowed structure sits the same proven deep-V bottom Merritt has refined across its convertible range, a configuration the yard has offered in parallel with the open-bridge layout for decades. Carbon fibre and lightweight coring run through the salon overhead, foredeck and flybridge structure, offsetting the extra weight that an enclosed bridge inevitably adds. The result is a profile that reads as purposeful rather than bulky, with the tuna tower and flybridge glazing the only real giveaways that this is the sheltered version of the 86.
Her deck plan is arranged in three distinct working zones: bridge, cockpit and interior, each kept deliberately self contained.
Crew quarters with two bunks and a dedicated head sit apart from the guest cabins, so the fishing team can come and go without crossing through private space. The salon keeps to an L-shaped settee and a galley built around an island counter, practical rather than showy, while the cockpit below the enclosed bridge stays clear for the business of fighting a fish. A 1.8 metre draught and a 16 degree deadrise aft keep her stable at trolling speed while still allowing reasonable access to shallower marinas.
Four staterooms, eight berths, and a layout that separates owner from crew without a single compromise.
The owner’s stateroom runs an island berth with a private head sized more generously than most convertibles of this length allow. A VIP cabin forward carries a queen island berth of its own, and further guest accommodation, including a cabin with over and under bunks to starboard, completes a four stateroom layout sleeping eight in total. Quarters for three crew sit apart from the guest side, keeping the working rhythm of a tournament campaign from intruding on family time. Two 38kW generators run quietly enough that climate control and galley systems carry on uninterrupted through the night at anchor.
The weight an enclosed flybridge adds, Merritt has engineered back out.
Twin MTU 16V2000 M96L diesels come standard, with Caterpillar C32 ACERT or MAN V12 packages offered as alternatives, delivering 30 knots at cruise and 35 knots at the top even with the additional structure overhead. Fifteen thousand litres of fuel give her a 700 nautical mile range, a touch shorter than her open-bridge sister but still enough for serious offshore work. Carbon fibre and lightweight coring through the upper structure claw back much of the weight penalty the enclosed design would otherwise carry, keeping her on her lines rather than settling low at the stern. A 6.4 metre beam and 1.8 metre draught round out a specification built for stability first.
