Sixty knots is the headline, but it is the hull beneath that makes the number believable.
Twin Mercury Verado 300 horsepower outboards come as standard, with 350 horsepower units or twin Mercury Racing 400R engines available for owners who want more. However she is specified, the 34′ Open cruises at thirty knots and tops out at sixty, figures backed by a genuinely heavy build for her class: a one inch solid fibreglass bottom, Nida-Core and Mantex coring through the topsides and decks, and a five inch transom reinforced with a laminated aluminium plate. A forward chine and pronounced bow flare work together to knock down spray at speed, keeping the cockpit drier than her length would suggest.
Nothing on deck is there by accident.
Metalwork throughout is polished stainless steel or powder coated aluminium, flush mounted so nothing catches a line or a bare foot underway. LED lighting above and below the waterline comes as standard, in a choice of colours, and the console is sized to carry twin seventeen inch displays for an owner who wants a proper offshore electronics suite rather than a single small screen. An optional stern seat rises on hydraulic rams at the push of a button, opening full access to the lazarette beneath, a small detail that makes a real difference when gear needs reaching mid trip.
A single cabin keeps the 34′ Open honest about what she is.
Up to eight guests can spend the day aboard, with a single cabin for two should an owner want to stay out overnight. Where the 34′ Open earns her keep is in the working details: twin seven foot fish boxes set into the cockpit deck, drained by diaphragm pumps rather than macerators, and a choice of livewells, a forty gallon and a twenty gallon tank at the transom as standard, with an eighty gallon under console option for owners who fish seriously rather than occasionally.
Midnight Express builds to specification, not off a fixed production line.
Within the 34′ Open’s hull, an owner can shape the boat around how she will actually be used, from engine choice to electronics to livewell configuration. A 1,136 litre fuel capacity supports a 300 nautical mile range at the thirty knot cruising speed, enough for a serious day offshore and the return leg without recalculating the trip. It is this combination, genuine range, true offshore construction and a build process that bends to the owner rather than the other way round, that sets the 34′ Open apart from boats that simply look the part.
A specification built for use, not for the brochure photo.
At 10.4 metres (34 feet) in length on a 3.1 metre beam, with a draught of just 0.9 metres, the 34′ Open is engineered and designed entirely in house by Midnight Express. Standard power is twin Mercury Verado 300 horsepower outboards, stepping up to 350 horsepower units or twin Mercury Racing 400R engines as options, feeding a 1,136 litre fuel tank for a 300 nautical mile range. She carries up to eight day guests and sleeps two in her single cabin, with one crew aboard to run her. It is a specification built around capability first, in keeping with a brand built on serious offshore performance.
