Thirty-eight knots, delivered without apparent effort.
Twin MAN V8 diesels, 1,200 horsepower apiece, drive the 56 Rivale to a cruising speed of 32 knots and a top end beyond 38, numbers that would flatter a boat half her size. A transom deadrise near 18 degrees keeps her light on her feet through a turn and firm off the throttle, the trade a fast open hull always makes for outright speed. Shaft drive through V drive transmissions sends the power aft with the mechanical directness Riva owners expect rather than the pod convenience newer yards default to. With 2,600 litres of fuel on board she covers 250 nautical miles at cruise, enough for a Riviera weekend without a second thought about the tank.
No hardtop, no compromise, just a curved windscreen and the wind.
Officina Italiana Design kept the Rivale’s silhouette low and taut, a single sweeping line from bow to transom uninterrupted by any fixed roof. The windscreen curves in one continuous piece of glass, tall enough to cut the breeze at speed yet shallow enough to preserve the open cockpit Riva built her reputation on. Stainless steel fittings, bespoke and hand finished, catch the light along the rail, while the foredeck carries the marque’s signature varnished mahogany, built up in multiple coats until it holds a mirror finish. It is a deliberately old fashioned piece of craftsmanship set against a genuinely modern hull, and it is precisely that contrast, heritage details on a 38 knot platform, that makes her instantly recognisable from the harbour wall.
Two cabins, one full width beam, and not an inch of it wasted.
The master sits amidships, spanning the nearly 4.7 metre beam with a double berth set beneath genuine hull windows, its own head and shower alongside. Forward, the VIP cabin offers standing headroom close to two metres and en suite facilities of its own, a rare generosity on a yacht this size. A compact day head serves guests using the cockpit and lower salon, while an optional second guest cabin trades a little storage for a third berth when the owner needs it. Materials favour hand stitched leather, lacquered joinery and the kind of fit and finish that, as Riva’s own philosophy has it, is considered from the outside in rather than added as an afterthought once the hull is drawn.
The cockpit is where the Rivale actually lives.
With no hardtop overhead, the aft deck opens fully to the sky, shaded only when needed by an electrically unfolding bimini over the helm and forward seating. Cushioned sunpads wrap the transom, and the lower salon galley keeps catering close at hand without pulling anyone away from the open air that defines an open yacht. Day guests number up to eight, comfortably spread between the cockpit and foredeck lounge, and the low freeboard keeps every seat connected to the water rather than isolated behind glass. It is a layout built entirely around the Mediterranean day, swimming, sunbathing and a late lunch at anchor, with the overnight cabins there for when the day simply will not end.
A Rivale asks less of its owner and gives back more presence per metre than almost anything else on the water.
Built by Riva under Ferretti Group’s naval architecture and engineering, she measures 17.3 metres on a 4.7 metre beam with a 1.5 metre draught, at 23 tonnes displacement. New pricing starts at approximately 2,000,000 euros, positioning her below Riva’s larger 76 Bahamas Super and comfortably inside the range most owners consider for a second or third yacht, the boat kept purely for speed and short runs along the coast. Twin MAN V8 engines and straightforward shaft drive make her a known, well proven configuration rather than a gamble. For a buyer who wants the Riva name, genuine open air performance and a footprint easy to berth and crew, the 56 Rivale remains one of the most complete arguments in the range.
