Sea Ray SLX 280 Yacht Review

Some day boats ask you to choose between speed and space. The Sea Ray SLX 280 refuses the trade. At 8.7 metres she sits among the smallest hulls in her class, yet she reaches 46 knots at full throttle and settles into a 30 knot cruise without strain, numbers that belong to a boat built for performance first. That performance comes without giving up her social side. Fifteen day guests fit comfortably across her cockpit and bow, a figure most boats this length cannot match, built on a sterndrive platform, a MerCruiser 6.2 litre engine as standard and an 8.2 litre MAG available, that keeps the deadrise deep and the ride settled in a chop. She draws only 1 metre, opening harbours and sandbanks that deeper boats avoid, and her 340 litre fuel tank gives her a genuine 150 nautical mile range for a full day on the water. For an owner who wants one boat that handles like a sports model in the morning and entertains a full guest list by afternoon, the SLX 280 is a difficult case to argue against.
Performance

Forty six knots from a 28 foot hull is not a typo.

The standard MerCruiser 6.2 litre engine, paired with a Bravo Three sterndrive, carries the SLX 280 to a 30 knot cruise and a 46 knot top speed, figures that put her ahead of most boats in her size bracket. The optional 8.2 litre MAG engine adds further headroom for owners who want more in reserve. A sterndrive setup, rather than an outboard on the transom, frees the stern for a proper swim platform and tucks the engine beneath the aft bench seat, out of sight and out of the way of guests. At a 1 metre draught, she reaches shallow anchorages that a deeper hull would have to avoid altogether.

Exterior Design

Her lines read as sport first, a low windscreen and sculpted hull sides built around Sea Ray’s deep V platform.

The cockpit sits low and deep for a boat of 8.7 metres, keeping guests secure rather than perched above the waterline at speed. A broad sun pad spans the transom with storage underneath and cup holders either side, and the swim platform hides a four step ladder that drops around 18 inches into the water for easy boarding. A swinging gate, a transom shower and a shore power connection round out a stern built for swimming and anchoring rather than posing at the dock. The engine itself sits beneath the aft bench seat, which lifts for access and keeps the whole run of deck uninterrupted.

Living Spaces

Fifteen guests, and not one of them crowded.

Forward, twin lounges face aft through a hinged windscreen, each with storage underneath for gear that would otherwise clutter the cockpit. Aft, the captain’s and companion’s chairs swivel to join the bench seating, turning the helm into part of the social deck rather than a separate station. A 12 volt refrigerator sits tucked under the captain’s seat, a two person bench doubles as storage, and a dedicated slot keeps soft sided coolers out from underfoot. The port console can be specified with a private head, a useful option on a boat built for full days on the water rather than short hops.

On Board

The helm feels like it belongs on a boat twice her size.

Dual 9 inch multi function displays, upgradable to 12 inch, put navigation, engine data and systems control within easy reach of the wide captain’s chair, and Active Trim adjusts running attitude automatically as speed and conditions change, a feature that normally appears on larger, costlier boats. An optional power tower folds down for bridges and trailering, and when raised it shades the whole cockpit without the bulk of a fixed hardtop. Add the optional lighting package, entertainment system and water system, and the SLX 280 moves from a weekend runabout to a genuinely well equipped day boat, backed by a five year factory warranty from Sea Ray.

Ownership & Specification

Everything about the SLX 280 is built to be driven hard and used often, not admired from the dock.

Built in GRP with a 21 degree deadrise and a 2.7 metre beam, she carries 340 litres of fuel for a 150 nautical mile range at cruise, enough for a full day on the water with margin to spare. The standard 6.2 litre MerCruiser engine and Bravo Three sterndrive come backed by Sea Ray’s five year factory warranty, and the 8.2 litre MAG option exists for owners who want more speed in reserve rather than more boat. For a first step into performance day boating, or a tender to a larger yacht that still needs to entertain fifteen people on its own terms, the SLX 280 earns her place in the fleet.
