The saildrive has quietly become the standard for cruising yachts around eleven metres, and for good reason. With the leg dropping straight down through the hull, the installation is compact, the propeller sits well clear of the keel, and the whole assembly runs noticeably quieter than a shaft and stern gland. On a yacht of this size, where the engine bay sits directly beneath the companionway, that difference is felt every time you motor out of a marina.
Eleven metres is the length at which a couple can still handle everything alone yet the accommodation begins to feel generous. Two proper cabins, a saloon that seats six, and a heads with a separate shower on the better boats. Add a saildrive and manoeuvring under power becomes almost effortless, with thrust close to the centre of the hull and very little prop walk to correct.
