Axopar 45 Sun Top Yacht Review

Where the Cross Top shelters, the Sun Top opens up completely. Axopar’s second take on the 45 platform strips away the roof and hands the whole deck over to daylight. At 13.7 metres and with a wider beam than her sister, she carries a bigger forward sun pad, a wider walkway and a mid ship set of fold-down sides that turn her into a floating terrace the moment the anchor goes down. Twin Mercury Verado 450R engines are standard, with a twin 600 or triple 450R option for owners who want the extra margin, and she is quicker for it: 45 knots at the top and a 30 knot cruise, with 350 nautical miles of range on the same 1,400 litre tank as the Cross Top. Axopar’s own design and engineering team have kept the accommodation modest, two cabins for four, in favour of deck space. For an owner whose priority is open air, speed and a genuinely sociable layout, the Sun Top is the more single-minded of the pair.
At Sea

She holds her line and asks little of the person behind the wheel.

The V-shaped bow cuts cleanly through chop, and a roll-reducing system keeps the ride level through a turn without bleeding off speed, a detail that matters when guests are standing rather than braced in a seat. Cruise settles at 30 knots, with 45 knots available when the water allows it, and the standard twin Verado 450R engines have enough in reserve that the optional triple fit is more about redundancy than raw pace. Expect a little spray across the aft cockpit at speed, the trade off for sides low enough to keep her open and connected to the water. It is a small price for a boat this responsive.

Design & Lines

Every line on the Sun Top points forward, toward open water rather than shelter.

The silhouette is lower and leaner than the Cross Top’s, with a soft top rather than a fixed roof and a forward sun pad that runs almost to the bow. Fold-down sides sit mid ship instead of at the stern, widening the swim and boarding platform exactly where guests gather rather than at the far end of the boat. Storage above the soft top keeps canoes and paddle boards out of the way of the deck below. Axopar’s engineering team drew a 4.25 metre beam into the hull without losing the planing manners that define the range, so the extra width reads as usable space rather than added weight.

Living Spaces

The galley faces aft, toward the table rather than the horizon, and that single choice changes how the boat is used.

Whoever is cooking stays part of the conversation instead of turning their back on it, a layout built for entertaining rather than solitary passage making. Walkways run the full length of the deck, so moving from the forward sun pad to the aft bathing platform never means stepping over guests or gear. That platform carries a roll bar for water sports, and the wide mid ship sides fold flat to extend it further when the boat is at anchor. Day capacity runs to eight, and the deck is genuinely usable by all of them at once rather than in shifts.

Range & Autonomy

Three hundred and fifty nautical miles is a serious number for a boat this size.

The 1,400 litre fuel capacity, shared with her Cross Top sister, stretches further here thanks to a lighter, more open structure and a hull tuned for a 30 knot cruise rather than outright top speed. That range turns a day boat into something closer to a touring platform, capable of covering real distance between anchorages without a refuelling stop breaking up the trip. A 1.1 metre draught keeps shallow water and quieter bays within reach along the way, and the standard twin Verado 450R engines deliver that range without asking for an unusual fuel specification or maintenance routine.

Ownership & Specification

At €850,000, the Sun Top costs less than her Cross Top sister and asks the owner to make a clear choice: deck over shelter.

She runs with a single crew member, carries eight for the day and four overnight across her two cabins, and covers her range on the standard engine fit without needing the triple 450R upgrade to feel complete. Axopar builds every 45 to the same structural standard regardless of configuration, so the saving does not come at the expense of quality. For a buyer who spends most of their time on the water rather than under a roof, and who wants speed and range alongside genuine deck space, the Sun Top is the sharper, more specialised half of the 45 platform.
