Forty knots is there when she wants it, twenty five is where she lives.
The standard MerCruiser 4.5 litre MPI ECT sterndrive delivers 250 horsepower, enough for a 25 knot cruise with 40 knots available at the top end. A 6.2 litre MPI ECT option raises that to 300 horsepower for an owner who wants a sharper hole shot or more margin when loaded with guests and gear. SmartCraft’s Digital Throttle and Shift takes the mechanical linkage out of the equation entirely, trading it for smooth, consistent gear changes, while Active Trim reads the boat’s attitude and adjusts the running angle automatically rather than leaving it to guesswork. With 189 litres of fuel on board she covers around 150 nautical miles before a stop is needed.
She carries Sea Ray’s current design language without shouting about it.
A defined sheerline and a clean deck mould give the SDX 230 a settled, purposeful stance at rest and underway. The transom sun pad folds its backrest flat to convert from lounging to sunbathing in one motion, and a standard ski tow eye keeps the stern ready for towing without extra hardware. A large swim platform runs the width of the transom, built for climbing aboard rather than clinging to a ladder. Nothing on her is there purely to be looked at. Every surface, from the moulded nonslip to the cockpit table fittings, is designed to be used, which is the clearest signature of Sea Ray’s current range.
The bow is no longer just somewhere to sit while underway.
A U shaped lounge at the bow comes with its own integrated cooler, so drinks and snacks never require a trip back to the cockpit, and an optional filler cushion turns the whole area into a single sunbathing pad. Aft, L shaped seating wraps the cockpit, with an optional table that turns the same space into a dining area for lunch at anchor. A transom in-floor compartment keeps wet gear, towels and life jackets out of the seating altogether. The starboard console holds a changing room with an optional head, a genuinely useful feature on a boat this size, where most rivals offer nothing more than a curtain.
Three zones, one simple idea: keep the boat moving smoothly between them.
The bow lounge and its cooler sit forward for arrival and relaxing, the helm and L shaped cockpit seating occupy the middle for the business of running and entertaining, and the transom sun pad and swim platform aft handle swimming, towing and boarding. A premium Fusion audio system carries sound evenly across all three without needing to be cranked at the helm to reach the bow. Several charging points, placed where guests actually sit rather than only at the console, mean phones and speakers stay topped up through a full day out. It is a boat organised around how a group actually spends a day on the water, not around a brochure diagram.
The SDX 230 asks a premium over her SPX sibling, and the specification explains why.
Priced from around 85,000 euros new, she carries a displacement of 1,905 kilograms and the same compact 7.2 by 2.6 metre footprint, but adds Digital Throttle and Shift, dual Simrad touchscreens, SmartCraft Connect and a changing room with an optional head as standard thinking rather than afterthoughts. Sea Ray’s design team built her, as they did her sister, entirely in-house, which keeps the hull, the deck mouldings and the electronics working as one system. For an owner choosing between the two models, the decision is less about size than about character, outright sport on one side, all day comfort and technology on the other. The SDX 230 is the comfort answer.
