El Nido Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in El Nido, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time for an El Nido charter?

The dry season from November to May gives the calmest seas and clearest lagoon water, with February to April typically the driest stretch. Wind and swell pick up during the June-to-October wet season, when afternoon squalls can make the narrow lagoon entrances trickier to navigate, though mornings often stay clear enough for a shorter excursion. Peak demand runs December through March, so booking well ahead matters most in those months.

How do we get to El Nido?

El Nido has its own small airport, Lio Airport (ENI), a few kilometres from town, with short direct flights from Manila and Cebu on light turboprop aircraft. The alternative is flying into Puerto Princesa (PPS), Palawan’s main airport, then continuing overland by van, a journey of roughly five to six hours over largely unpaved road, which is why most charter guests choose the direct flight instead.

Which lagoons and bays are worth the detour?

Bacuit Bay itself, right off El Nido town, gives sheltered access to most of the archipelago’s highlights within a short tender ride. Miniloc Island anchors close to both Shimizu and the Small Lagoon, while Cadlao Island, the largest and most visible from town, has quieter bays on its far side away from the day-tour routes. Pinagbuyutan Island, further south, is less visited but rewards the extra distance with a near-empty lagoon.

How many days should we spend in El Nido?

Three to four days covers the main Bacuit Archipelago highlights at an easy pace, enough time to rotate through the classic lagoons, beaches and snorkel sites without repeating an anchorage. A week allows for slower mornings, a full day at Nacpan Beach away from the bay, and some flexibility to wait out a squall, which is worth building in given how quickly conditions can change in the narrow lagoon channels.

Do we need to pay a fee to visit El Nido's lagoons?

Yes. El Nido charges an Eco-Tourism Development Fee, currently 400 pesos for non-Palawan residents, which funds the marine park rangers and coastal conservation projects across the bay. The fee is collected once on arrival and covers all island-hopping stops for ten days, so a multi-day charter only needs to pay it a single time, a small cost that helps keep the lagoons this clear.
