British Columbia Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in British Columbia, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.

01

When is the best time to charter British Columbia's coast?

June through September brings the calmest seas and the best wildlife viewing, with water in sheltered inlets such as Desolation Sound warming to around 24 degrees Celsius, unusually mild for this latitude. Orcas are most reliably seen off Johnstone Strait between July and October, when the northern resident population follows salmon runs along the coast. Spring and early summer bring fewer boats and longer daylight, though the water stays noticeably cooler.

02

What's the nearest airport for a British Columbia charter?

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is the main gateway, with most charters departing from Vancouver itself or from Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. Guests heading straight for Desolation Sound often fly on to Comox or Campbell River, cutting several hours off the transfer. Itineraries reaching the Great Bear Rainforest or Khutzeymateen Sanctuary usually begin further north, with a connecting flight to Bella Bella or Port Hardy.

03

Which anchorages shouldn't we miss along the coast?

Princess Louisa Inlet, reached through the tidal narrows at Malibu Rapids, is the coast’s best-known anchorage, ending at the 40-metre drop of Chatterbox Falls. Prideaux Haven, inside Desolation Sound Marine Park, offers similarly dramatic scenery with far warmer water for swimming. Further north, Blind Channel and God’s Pocket provide sheltered stops for itineraries continuing toward the Broughton Archipelago and Great Bear Rainforest.

04

How many days should a British Columbia charter include?

A week to ten days suits a loop through the Gulf Islands and Desolation Sound, the most accessible and best-provisioned stretch of coast. Reaching the Great Bear Rainforest or Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary further north adds several more days of cruising, and most itineraries covering both regions run closer to two weeks. Shorter three or four day charters generally stay within the Gulf Islands alone.

05

Can guests see grizzly bears from their own yacht?

Not directly at the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary itself: British Columbia’s first grizzly sanctuary, established in 1994, permits no private land access and requires visitors to view bears from the water with a licensed guide, who checks in at a ranger station on arrival. Yachts can still anchor nearby and arrange a guided tender excursion into the estuary. Grizzlies are also occasionally seen along less regulated stretches of the Great Bear Rainforest coast further north.
