Sunseeker built the Hawk 38 for buyers who miss the offshore racing years. It is an 11.85 metre open sports boat on a stepped hull drawn with Fabio Buzzi Design, whose record runs to 43 world speed records, and it will hold 62 knots on twin Mercury Verado 400R outboards with Mercury Racing Digital Zero Effort throttles at the helm.
The step is the point. It lifts the hull clear at speed and keeps it there, so the boat carries its pace through chop rather than pounding across it, helped by a dry weight of only 5,000 kilos. Going to outboards rather than sterndrives frees the transom, keeps servicing simple and inexpensive, and takes full advantage of what the current generation of Mercury blocks will deliver. Twin 450R outboards are offered for owners who want more.
Two roles suit it. The first is the fast day boat: a heads compartment below, 700 litres of fuel and a 200 nautical mile range at 21 knots, enough to cross to another island and back without planning the day around refuelling. The second is the superyacht chase boat, where a choice of paint finishes and upholstery lets the tender be specified to match the mothership.
Production has ended, so the used market is the only route in, and few boats change hands in any given year.
