Sea of Cortez Charter Itinerary

Sea of Cortez Itinerary

Sea of Cortez Yacht Charter
Steinbeck came here in 1940 and Cousteau later called it the world’s aquarium, which was marketing but not by much. The Sea of Cortez holds nearly nine hundred fish species and a third of the planet’s marine mammals, hemmed between the Baja desert and the Mexican mainland.

The contrast is the thing: cactus and red rock running down to water full of sea lions, mantas and, in season, blue whales. The islands are uninhabited and mostly protected. The anchorages are empty. And the fishing, if you want it, is serious.

Every route we shape is a starting point, not a fixed schedule. Stay a second day where the light is right, move with the weather, or follow a captain who knows the cove worth the detour. That freedom is the point of chartering. What follows is one considered way to read the Sea of Cortez; the rest we tailor to you.
Day 1

Cabo San Lucas

Board at Cabo and run out to Land’s End, where the Pacific meets the Gulf and El Arco stands through the rock at the tip of the peninsula. Sea lions on the ledges, pelicans overhead. Dinner on the water as the light goes, then north into the Gulf overnight, leaving the crowds behind for good.

Day 2

Cabo Pulmo

Cabo Pulmo holds the only living hard coral reef on the west coast of North America. It was fished almost to nothing, then protected in 1995 at the fishermen’s own request ’ and the biomass has since increased more than fourfold. Snorkel or dive it. It is the best conservation story in the hemisphere.

Day 3

Espiritu Santo

A desert island of pink volcanic rock cut into a dozen coves on its western side, each with a beach and no one on it. At Los Islotes, a colony of California sea lions treats snorkellers as entertainment ’ the pups will come to within inches. Paddleboard in the afternoon, and anchor in a cove of your own.

Day 4

San Francisco & San Jose

Isla San Francisco has a perfect crescent bay beneath red cliffs and a salt flat behind. Kayak the mangroves at San Jose, thick with herons and frigatebirds. The fishing village at El Pardito has a few families on a rock, living as they have for generations. Beach picnic, and a long swim.

Day 5

Agua Verde

Agua Verde is a bay on the peninsula itself, backed by the Sierra de la Giganta rising sheer behind. Goats on the hillside, a handful of houses, and fishermen who will sell you scallops and lobster off the panga. Snorkel the reef, hike the ridge, and eat better than you have any right to.
Day 6

San Cosme

Further north to San Cosme, hot springs at the shore and reef in the shallows. Dolphins work the channel here in numbers, and the birdlife on the cliffs is constant. Take a mule up into the arroyo behind if the idea appeals ’ the desert is stranger and more alive than it looks from the water.

Day 7

Danzante

Danzante lies off Loreto in the marine park, a thin island with snorkelling along its eastern shore and beaches that see almost no one. A last paddle, a last hike to the ridge for the view over the Gulf, and then the passage south. Baja gives up nothing easily and keeps everything it has.
