Jamaica Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Jamaica, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time to charter Jamaica?

December through April is the driest, most settled stretch, with lower humidity and calmer seas along the north coast. Hurricane season runs June through November, and while Jamaica sits far enough south that direct hits are less frequent than in the northern Caribbean, July also brings Reggae Sumfest to Montego Bay, worth building a charter around if live music matters as much as the beaches.

What's the nearest airport for a Jamaica charter?

Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay handles most international arrivals and sits close to the north coast anchorages around Ocho Rios and Negril. Norman Manley International (KIN), on the outskirts of Kingston, suits a charter starting on the south coast or heading straight for Port Royal and Port Antonio on the northeast tip of the island.

Which anchorages should be on the itinerary in Jamaica?

Errol Flynn Marina in Port Antonio, named for the Hollywood actor who settled there in the 1950s, is the best equipped stop on the northeast coast and close to the Blue Lagoon and the Rio Grande. Discovery Bay and Ocho Rios both offer easy access to the north coast’s beaches and waterfalls, while Port Royal, at the mouth of Kingston Harbour, suits a charter that starts or ends in the capital.

How many days should we plan for Jamaica?

A week allows a comfortable run along the north coast, taking in Ocho Rios, Dunn’s River Falls and a stretch of beach time in Negril or Runaway Bay. Ten days or more give room to add Port Antonio and the Blue Mountains inland, or a stop in Kingston for the Bob Marley Museum, without rushing the beaches that remain the main draw for most charter guests.

Is Blue Mountain coffee worth buying locally in Jamaica?

Genuine Blue Mountain coffee can only be grown within a legally defined zone in the parishes surrounding Blue Mountain Peak, and the name is a protected certification mark enforced by Jamaica’s coffee regulator and registered as a trademark in the US, UK and EU. Coffee grown just outside the boundary is sold as Jamaica High Mountain or Supreme instead, so buying directly from an estate tour or a shop that can show its certification is the surest way to get the real thing.
