Meganissi Superyacht Charter

Meganissi is a small and beautiful island in the Ionian Sea, lying just off the coast of Lefkada. Green, tranquil and deeply indented with coves, it is a favourite among yacht guests for its sheltered anchorages, clear water and unspoilt, authentic charm.

The island’s deeply carved coastline is a paradise for cruising, offering a succession of protected bays, hidden coves and dramatic sea caves, including the famous Papanikolis cave, one of the largest in Greece. Its clear, calm water is ideal for swimming, snorkelling and days spent quietly at anchor.

Ashore, Meganissi is refreshingly unspoilt, with a handful of pretty villages, welcoming tavernas and a genuinely peaceful atmosphere. Olive groves and cypress trees cloak the gentle hills, and the pace of life remains slow and traditional.

With its sheltered coves, clear water and authentic charm, Meganissi is a delightful Ionian retreat. Guests can anchor in protected bays, explore dramatic sea caves and enjoy the tranquil beauty and genuine hospitality of this unspoilt island.

Whether exploring hidden caves by tender or enjoying a long evening in a quiet harbour taverna, guests here discover the unspoilt and tranquil charm that makes the smaller Ionian islands so rewarding to cruise.

Meganissi Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Meganissi, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time to sail to Meganisi?

May through September offers the most reliable weather, and Meganisi’s sheltered position east of Lefkada means it stays calm even on days when the open Ionian further out is livelier. July and August bring the warmest water and the busiest anchorages at Ormos Abelike, while June and September offer similarly good swimming with noticeably fewer boats sharing the coves.

How do you get to Meganisi?

Meganisi has no airport of its own, so almost every visitor arrives by boat, most simply by joining a charter already cruising the Lefkada area. The nearest airport is Aktion (PVK) near Preveza, around twenty two kilometres from Nydri on Lefkada, from where a public ferry crosses to Port Vathy in about twenty minutes. Many yachts skip the ferry altogether and sail direct from Nydri or Vlicho Bay.

Which bay is best for an overnight stop at Meganisi?

Ormos Abelike is generally considered the prettiest and most sheltered of the island’s three main anchorages, with several coves offering good holding and a couple of tavernas ashore. Ormos Kapali, the first inlet reached sailing east from Port Vathy, is a close alternative with sandy coves at both ends. Port Vathy itself, the main harbour, suits guests who want to walk up into the village for dinner.

How many days should we plan for Meganisi?

One night is usually enough to explore Papanikolis Cave by tender, swim in one of Ormos Abelike’s coves and enjoy a quiet dinner in Spartochori or Vathy. Most charter itineraries treat Meganisi as a peaceful stop within the sheltered Lefkada cruising ground rather than a standalone base, often pairing it with a night in Vlicho Bay or Sivota.

What is the story behind Papanikolis Cave?

The cave is named after the Greek submarine Papanikolis, said to have used it as a hiding place during the Second World War after operations against Italian vessels in the Ionian Sea. The story has become one of Meganisi’s best-known pieces of local history, retold by guides bringing tenders in to explore the cave’s dim inner chamber. Whether the full vessel could fit inside or not, the tale has given the cave its lasting name.
