About THE LANGLEY

THE LANGLEY is what happens when a shipyard with a schooner tradition is asked to build big. Aegean Yacht launched her in 2009 in steel, 62 metres over three masts, and a rebuild completed in 2024 took her back to bare bones and returned her as a modern charter yacht wearing a classic profile. She is one of very few yachts of this size that can put up full canvas and mean it.

The appeal is partly the sailing and partly the pace it sets. At nine knots under power she is unhurried by design, and under sail she is quieter still, a different proposition from a fast motor yacht, and a better one if the point of the week is the coastline rather than the distance covered. The eastern Mediterranean suits her exactly: Turkish bays, Greek islands, and the kind of anchorages where a three-masted rig is the most interesting thing on the water.

Her decks are where she spends her charm. A spa pool is set into the sundeck teak with sunpads and shade around it, and the deckhouse behind carries her name in raised lettering. Below that, a long shaded deck holds a bar and dining for the full complement, and the aft deck steps down to a submersible platform that becomes a beach at anchor, with the tenders and toys, jetskis, Seabobs, e-foils, brought alongside. There are enough separate outdoor spaces here that twelve guests never have to share one.

Inside she is panelled in warm timber and detailed in the traditional idiom, but the rooms are bright rather than heavy. The main saloon runs to a deep corner sofa in blue, armchairs facing it and a bar behind, with the coffered ceiling giving the room its proportion. Forward, a dining room seats twelve around an oval table under a raised ceiling detail. A second, quieter lounge sits away from both, which is the room people gravitate to in the afternoon, sofas, a low table, and a companionway through the middle of it.

Accommodation is for twelve across six cabins, with an additional twin set aside for supernumeraries, useful when a family travels with a nanny or a security detail. The master is the largest by some margin, lit from a cove above the bed and hung with marine art; the guest doubles are panelled to the same standard, several with a daybed under the portholes, and the twins are properly sized rather than an afterthought.

A crew of eight runs her, which is lean for 62 metres and tells you something about how she is set up: this is a yacht for a group that wants space and quiet rather than a large service operation moving around them. Charter rates start at €175,000 per week.

What she offers that a motor yacht of the same length cannot is a change in register. Under sail, with the engines off and three masts drawing, a 62-metre yacht becomes a very calm place. That is the whole argument for her, and it is a good one.
