Dehler / Dehler 38 SQ
The 38 SQ brings Dehler’s squaretop-sail philosophy into a hull size that balances offshore capability with shorthanded ease. At 11.64 metres, the judel/vrolijk design carries a wider beam (3.75 m) than earlier Dehler 38 iterations, translating into a stiffer platform, more interior volume, and a cockpit broad enough for a full crew to work without choreography. The signature SQ rig pairs a square-topped mainsail with a performance bowsprit, extending the downwind sail area without adding a pole to the inventory. Upwind, a 2.03-metre standard keel plants her rail down and tracks with minimal helm correction, while a shallower draft option opens the door to Baltic and Solent harbours where depth charts get interesting. Below, two generous cabins share a single heads compartment and an L-shaped galley that runs to port, with enough headroom and natural light to make multi-day passages comfortable rather than endurance tests. A 29 HP Yanmar on saildrive handles close-quarters work quietly, and a 160-litre fuel tank gives enough range for a windless delivery leg. Build quality follows the HanseGroup vacuum-infusion process: consistent laminate thickness, bonded structural grids, and hardware choices that reflect the yard’s racing pedigree. On the racecourse, the 38 SQ competes credibly in IRC and ORC; at anchor, she converts to a capable coastal cruiser without apology.
