She turns tight without ever feeling nervous about it.
Independent testing found little grab or chine walk through both gentle and tight turns, the pickle fork bow absorbing hull shock as she crosses her own wake and leaving a calm path behind at speed. She reaches planing in 3.4 seconds and will go from 0 to 20 mph in 5.3, numbers that matter more to a skier waiting their turn than any outright top speed. The Gen 2 surf system is most noticeable at towing speeds, shaping the wake precisely enough that a rider does not need to think about which side they are on.
The pickle fork bow is Master Craft’s signature, and on the NXT22 it earns its keep twice over.
Cutting the bow back into a fork shape frees up cockpit space that a conventional V bottom would waste on structure alone, while two lifting strakes and reversed chines underneath keep her settled through a turn. Ballast is split in three: a fixed tank forward of midships and two fillable bags in the stern, giving a rider the choice of a deep, aggressive wake or a flatter one for beginners without touching the throttle. On a 2.5 metre beam, none of it crowds the cockpit, which is the real trick of the design.
The dash does the thinking so the driver does not have to.
A touchscreen at the helm carries factory wake profiles for skiing, boarding and surfing on either side, called up in seconds rather than adjusted by feel. Ballast switches sit within reach of the wheel, the driver’s seat wraps with a fold up bolster for a clear sightline astern, and a simple cluster of gauges covers the basics without cluttering the view forward. An upgraded sound system is available for owners who want the deck to carry as much atmosphere as wake, and the aluminium tower folds down easily enough for a single person to manage at the dock.
Fourteen guests fit without anyone perching on a cooler.
The cockpit wraps in a horseshoe around the stern, and the centre cushion pulls forward to turn part of the lounge into a seat that faces aft, useful for watching a rider without twisting around. A full width sun lounge sits over the engine box with storage built into either side, the bow carries its own set of removable cushions for sunbathing at anchor, and a teak swim platform makes getting in and out of the water straightforward. Ski and board storage runs from under the port bow backrest back beneath the cockpit lounge, keeping gear out of the way without cluttering the deck.
Three Ilmor V8s are offered, and all three answer to the same simple brief: more wake, not more noise.
The standard engine is a 373hp Ilmor 6.0 litre MPI V8, with two further Ilmor V8s available for owners who want sharper acceleration or a heavier ballast load to work against. A V drive transmission lets the engine sit further aft than a conventional shaft arrangement, which is part of why the cockpit behind it never feels cramped. With 178 litres of fuel on board she is rated for 250 nautical miles, comfortably more than any day on the water demands, and Master Craft backs every engine option with a five year warranty.
