Thirty knots at cruise, forty at the top. For a day boat built around watersports, that is serious pace.
Power comes from Ilmor’s inboard range, a 6.2 litre unit as standard with 7.4 litre and 5.3 litre alternatives for owners who want to tune the balance between acceleration and economy. Fed through a V-drive, the XStar 23 is quick onto the plane regardless of load, and with the ballast drained the wake flattens out below 20 mph for riders still finding their feet. SurfStar handles the rest, shaping the wave from a beginner’s gentle roll to a true pro surf break through a digital helm display, while a J-shaped curl lets surfers settle further back without losing push. Range runs to 150 nautical miles on 246 litres of fuel, enough for a full day of towing and still some open water besides.
The old dipped sheerline is gone, replaced by something leaner and more deliberate.
MasterCraft’s in-house team redrew the XStar’s profile for 2025, and the Z100 tower is the clearest expression of the change: it folds flat in seconds and carries upholstered inlays that echo straight through to the cockpit. Aft, a cascading walk-through replaces the old transom step, softening the route from cockpit to swim platform, while the windshield passage runs on friction hinges so it never slams underway. At 2.6 metres across and with a 0.8 metre draught, she is easy to handle and shallow enough for the coves larger craft cannot reach. The result is a profile that reads as considered rather than crowded, athletic without needing to shout about it.
Twelve guests, one boat, and remarkably few compromises for the size.
A Murphy seat rises from beneath a cockpit floor hatch when needed and folds away to leave a clear table behind it, a neat solution to the space a 23 footer cannot otherwise spare. Two loungers flank the engine box at the transom, finished in upholstery that tests of the model describe as genuinely well made, with SeaDek underfoot in a modern linear pattern. Wireless chargers and sunglass holders are built into the cubbies, small details that matter on a boat meant for a full day outdoors. At the helm, the captain’s seat adjusts fore, aft and vertically at the touch of a button, a deliberate piece of comfort engineering in a boat this size.
Two screens, one dial, and a sound system built for a party at the back of the boat.
A 15 inch panoramic display sits ahead of the wheel, paired with a 12 inch touchscreen to its right, both run through MasterCraft’s latest interface. A rotary MyDrive dial beside the throttle handles the settings used most, wave shape and speed control among them, without forcing a hand off the wheel and onto a screen. Four cameras, covering the bow, the tower and both stern quarters, give a full view of riders and traffic alike. The MAAX audio system carries twenty six speakers across the cockpit, tower, transom and subwoofers, split into seven zones that can run independently, so music at the helm need not be music at the back.
A specialist built to a clear brief, and finished to a standard that belies her size.
At 7.01 metres with a 2.6 metre beam and a 0.8 metre draught, the XStar 23 sits easily on a trailer or in a marina berth and launches without fuss. She carries twelve day guests, a figure that reflects her role as a performance day boat rather than an overnight cruiser, and MasterCraft’s own design and engineering teams stand behind every system on board, from the hull to the tower to the audio. For an owner who wants genuine watersports pedigree, a cockpit free of compromise, and a boat that looks as considered at rest as she performs underway, the XStar 23 makes a focused and credible case.
