MODX / MODX 70
The MODX 70 is a radical 21-metre blue-water catamaran from the French builder MODX, developed by Ocean Developpement, the yard behind the record-breaking MOD70 ocean-racing trimarans. It is conceived as a genuinely self-sufficient, zero-emission yacht: a platform that can cross oceans and spend long periods at anchor in remote places without burning a drop of fossil fuel, while still delivering the space and finish of a luxury catamaran.
At the heart of the concept is a pairing of technologies never before combined on a single vessel. Two automated 100-square-metre Aeroforce inflatable wing sails rise from retractable masts to provide clean, powerful and easily handled propulsion, while a 70-square-metre solar array and a 250 kWh lithium battery bank feed an all-electric drivetrain with variable-pitch propellers. Under sail those propellers spin to regenerate power through hydrogeneration, so the yacht effectively refuels herself as she travels, and she can still motor silently on battery alone when required.
Sustainability runs through the structure as well as the systems. The hulls are built with Sicomin Infugreen, a partially bio-sourced epoxy resin, combined with recycled PET foam cores, flax fibre and cork, so the environmental ambition is engineered into the laminate rather than added as an afterthought. The result is a yacht that is light, strong and dramatically lower in embodied impact than a conventional build.
Life aboard is scaled to match the technology. More than 185 square metres of living space includes a 54-square-metre saloon with 360-degree panoramic views, a private lounge, a dining area for ten, a full galley, a bar, a refrigerated wine cellar and a built-in home cinema. Accommodation is arranged for eight guests in four double cabins, two of which can convert to twins, with two further cabins for three crew. An optional flybridge adds a large additional social and sun-lounging zone, and the whole interior can be configured in a wide range of natural and bio-sourced materials, fabrics and colours.
Performance is genuinely sail-powered rather than token. In around ten knots of breeze the MODX 70 will make about ten knots; in fifteen she reaches roughly fourteen; and in twenty knots of wind she can sail at up to eighteen. On battery alone she has a range of around 110 nautical miles at a quiet five knots, enough to cover harbour approaches, calms and anchorage manoeuvres without any noise or emissions.
The Aeroforce wing concept is central to what makes the yacht practical as well as clean. Unlike a conventional rig, the inflatable wings can be deployed and reefed automatically at the touch of a button, so a short-handed crew can manage the sail plan safely in changing conditions, and the wings stow compactly when the yacht is at anchor or in harbour. Combined with a bow thruster and integrated navigation and energy-management systems, this makes a technically ambitious yacht surprisingly straightforward to operate.
That blend of racing-derived engineering and real-world usability reflects Ocean Developpements pedigree. The team that built boats to break round-the-world records has applied the same obsession with weight, efficiency and reliability to a cruising platform, and the MODX 70 is the first production expression of that thinking.
MODX offers the 70 in owner, eco-charter and eco-expedition configurations, and backs the yacht with a five-year structural guarantee, a three-year Aeroforce wing guarantee and a two-year general guarantee. For an owner who wants to explore the worlds most pristine cruising grounds while leaving them undisturbed, the MODX 70 is one of the most complete expressions yet of sustainable luxury under sail. Pricing is quoted by the builder at approximately EUR 8,000,000 excluding VAT; final specification and current pricing should be confirmed directly with the yard.

Two automated 100-square-metre Aeroforce inflatable wing sails on retractable masts provide the main propulsion, backed by an all-electric drivetrain, a 250 kWh battery bank and a 70-square-metre solar array. Variable-pitch propellers regenerate power under sail through hydrogeneration, so the yacht largely refuels herself and can also motor silently on battery alone.
The hulls are laminated with Sicomin Infugreen partially bio-sourced resin, recycled PET foam, flax fibre and cork, engineering the environmental ambition into the structure. The build is light and strong with a dramatically lower embodied impact than a conventional catamaran.
