Forty knots is a genuine figure, not a brochure claim.
The Wally Rocket 51 carries 164 square metres of upwind sail and more than double that running downwind, driving a light, planing hull rather than the displacement shape most raceboats still rely on. She cruises near 32 knots and touches 40 at pace, numbers that explain why sailors have called her among the fastest raceboats afloat. Wally and Botin Partners designed her specifically to out pace a TP52 on corrected time. Water ballast, 550 litres of it, substitutes for the crew weight a TP52 stacks on the rail, so fewer hands are needed to sail her at full speed. A small Yanmar 3JH40 diesel handles manoeuvring in and out of harbour, nothing more. Every knot on the racecourse comes from the sail plan alone.
Nothing about the Wally Rocket 51 is there by accident.
Botin Partners, the naval architecture practice behind a run of TP52 world championship winners, drew a hull built for speed on any point of sail, from close reaching to a dead run. The build itself is Wally through and through, its styling and deck ergonomics refined with Santa Maria Magnolfi: pre-preg carbon over Corecell foam below the waterline, a Nomex cored deck above it, chosen to keep displacement at just 6,250 kilograms for a boat 15.5 metres long on a 4.3 metre beam. A 3.5 metre draught, carried on a deep fin keel, gives her the righting moment to stand up to her own sail plan without the water ballast doing all the work. The result reads less like a cruising yacht and more like a scaled up grand prix raceboat, because that is exactly what she is.
Electric winches turn an eleven person crew into an eight person one.
The Wally Rocket 51 can be sailed at full pace with as few as eight or nine hands rather than the eleven a raceboat her size would normally demand, thanks to electric winches that take the grinding out of sail handling. Her water ballast system, 550 litres shifted from side to side as she tacks, does the job normally left to crew stacked on the rail, trimming weight and cost from every race day. Wally projects running costs at roughly a third of a TP52’s for a boat built to beat one. It is an engineering brief aimed squarely at the economics of ownership as much as at outright pace, built for owners who want to race often rather than occasionally.
There is room for eleven on deck and nothing for anyone below.
The Wally Rocket 51 carries up to eleven for a day of racing, and every one of them has a job. This is a boat built without a saloon, a berth or a galley, because none of them make her faster. What she offers instead is a cockpit and deck plan tuned purely for sail handling and tactics, from the electric winch stations to the water ballast controls. Owners drawn to the Wally Rocket 51 are not looking for a weekend aboard at anchor. They are looking for a start line, a race committee boat, and a course that rewards a boat built with nothing extra to carry.
A raceboat with a business case, not just a design brief.
Built by Wally in Italy to a Botin Partners design, the Wally Rocket 51 measures 15.5 metres overall on a 4.3 metre beam, with a 3.5 metre draught and a light displacement of 6,250 kilograms. Pricing starts from 3,200,000 euros. For that, an owner gets a one design raceboat purpose built to beat the TP52 fleet on corrected time, at close to a third of the running cost, backed by a naval architecture pedigree that includes a string of TP52 world championship wins. For an owner serious about racing rather than simply owning a fast looking yacht, the Wally Rocket 51 offers a direct route from design brief to the top of the results board.
