American boatbuilding brings a distinct philosophy to eleven metres. Where a European yard of the same length is often thinking about a Mediterranean cruise, an American yard is thinking about a hard run offshore and a return in a building sea. The hulls are heavier through the forefoot, the scantlings are generous, and the deck hardware is sized with a margin that assumes the boat will be used rather than admired.
That approach produces boats that age unusually well. Eleven metre sportfishers, walkarounds and centre consoles from Florida and the Carolinas are often still working twenty years after launch, because the structure was built for it and the systems were kept simple enough to repair anywhere. Engine access tends to be excellent, and there is rarely a component buried where it cannot be reached.
