Heliskiing from a yacht exists because of one geographic accident: in a handful of places, glaciated mountains run straight into deep water. Where that happens, a yacht with a helideck becomes a moving base camp no lodge can match. You wake in a fjord, the helicopter lifts from the aft deck, and you ski to the shoreline where the tender is waiting.
The advantage is access and weather rather than luxury. A lodge is fixed, so a bad forecast costs you the day. A yacht repositions overnight to the next fjord system, so you follow the snow instead of waiting for it. Across ten days that usually means several more skiing days than a shore-based trip, on terrain nobody has touched that season.
Five cruising grounds work, though not identically. Greenland is the benchmark, best from April to June when the fjords open and the light lasts almost all day. Alaska runs April into mid-May. Iceland gives spring descents to the Arctic Ocean off the Troll Peninsula. Antarctica is the December to February option and the rarest of them. Norway is the exception: heliskiing is prohibited there by law, so the yacht-based product is ski touring, and it is superb.
The yachts able to do this are few. Our explorer fleet with certified helidecks runs from 50 to 126 metres at roughly 230,000 to 2,200,000 euros a week, and every trip is built around the aircraft, the guides and the ice.
