These are remote marine parks where mooring regulations are strict, provisioning does not exist, and the payoff is diving and wildlife that rank among the best in the world.
Explorer yachts operating from Phuket carry fuel reserves and watermaker capacity to stay out for multiple days without returning to port. They bring dive centres with compressors, multiple RIBs and crew experienced in navigating the outer Andaman where chart accuracy varies. The Similan Islands, 84 kilometres northwest of Phuket, are accessible in a full day’s passage. The Surin Islands are a further day, and the Myanmar border dive sites, including Richelieu Rock, are another day beyond that.
Charter rates for Thailand explorer yachts start from around 40,000 euros per week, with the advance provisioning allowance adding approximately 30 percent for fuel for longer passages, provisions, crew gratuity and specialist dive equipment. The Similan and Surin national parks are open to overnight stays from October 15 through to May 15, which defines the practical charter season for this type of itinerary.
Beyond the national parks, the east coast of the Malay Peninsula and the islands of Ko Tarutao offer different but equally rewarding explorer territory, with mangrove systems, sea turtle nesting beaches and traditional fishing communities.
