Four hundred thousand euros buys a very capable displacement sailing yacht, and this is a bracket where the hull form genuinely changes what your money achieves. Rather than a larger, lighter production cruiser, the same figure reaches a properly engineered blue water displacement design with the tankage, structure and systems for ocean work. The choice is the interesting part. The same budget will buy a nearly new fifteen metre production yacht drawn for coastal and charter use, or a fourteen metre displacement cruiser from a premium yard a decade into its life. The second is a considerably more capable ocean boat, the first a considerably more comfortable Mediterranean one. Neither is wrong.
At this level the inventory matters as much as the hull. A watermaker, generator, self steering, offshore sail wardrobe, storm canvas and serious ground tackle can represent fifty thousand euros of difference between two apparently comparable yachts, and they are all tedious and expensive to add later. Survey should be thorough, covering the keel joint and floors, rudder stock and bearings, chainplate landings, rig age and certification, and a full audit of the offshore systems.
