Juneau Superyacht Charter

Juneau is the capital city of Alaska and one of North America’s most spectacular destinations, surrounded by towering mountains, pristine forests, dramatic glaciers, and breathtaking coastal scenery. Nestled between the Gastineau Channel and the rugged wilderness of Southeast Alaska, Juneau offers a unique blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, rich history, and authentic Alaskan culture.

Unlike most capital cities, Juneau is accessible only by air or sea, adding to its remote charm and adventurous appeal. Visitors are welcomed by stunning landscapes that provide endless opportunities for exploration, from glacier viewing and whale watching to hiking scenic mountain trails and discovering untouched wilderness. The city serves as a gateway to some of Alaska’s most remarkable natural attractions, including the world-famous Mendenhall Glacier and the surrounding Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the United States.

Juneau is also known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant local community. Visitors can explore museums, historic districts, Indigenous cultural experiences, local art galleries, and waterfront attractions that tell the story of Alaska’s fascinating history and traditions. Throughout the year, the city offers a variety of outdoor activities and wildlife encounters, making it a favorite destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Whether cruising through scenic fjords, spotting humpback whales, hiking through lush forests, or simply taking in the stunning mountain and ocean views, Juneau delivers an unforgettable Alaskan experience where nature and culture come together in extraordinary ways.

Juneau Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Juneau, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
What's the best time of year to charter out of Juneau?

May through September is the charter season, with June and July offering the longest daylight and calmest water in Stephens Passage and the Gastineau Channel. Whale watching improves through the summer as humpbacks arrive to feed, peaking in July and August. Late September brings a chance of early Northern Lights as nights lengthen, though rainfall also increases, so most guests still favor the June to August window for reliability.

How do we actually get to Juneau if there's no road?

Juneau International Airport (JNU) is the only way in besides sea, with direct summer flights from Seattle and Anchorage; there’s no highway connection to the rest of Alaska or Canada. Most charters embark straight from Juneau’s harbor within a short taxi ride of the airport. Some guests instead arrive by state ferry on the Alaska Marine Highway, which is slower but allows bringing a vehicle as far as Juneau’s own limited road network.

What are the best anchorages near Juneau?

Auke Bay, just north of downtown, is the practical choice for provisioning and crew changes close to the airport. Taku Harbor and Funter Bay, both a half day’s cruise away, offer quieter overnight stops with good fishing. For a longer excursion, Tracy Arm Fjord to the south is a full-day round trip but rewards guests with tidewater glaciers and iceberg-strewn water rivaling Glacier Bay.

How many days should we spend around Juneau?

Three to five days covers Mendenhall Glacier, a whale watching run in Stephens Passage, and a day trip to Tracy Arm Fjord. Guests wanting to combine Juneau with Sitka or Glacier Bay typically extend to seven to ten days, since both require a half day or more of cruising each way. Juneau also works well as a one or two night stop within a longer Inside Passage itinerary.

Do we need a permit to see glaciers from Juneau, the way we would at Glacier Bay?

No. Unlike Glacier Bay National Park, which requires a permit for any vessel entering park waters between June 1 and August 31, Juneau’s glaciers, including Mendenhall and Tracy Arm, sit outside the national park boundary and carry no entry permit or vessel quota. That makes Juneau a more flexible base for last-minute itinerary changes, though Tracy Arm can still get crowded with tour boats at midday.
