The Kimberley Superyacht Charter

The Kimberley is one of the last great wilderness frontiers on earth, a vast and remote region in Australia’s far northwest where dramatic red-rock gorges, thundering waterfalls and turquoise bays meet an ancient and unspoilt coastline. Wild, spectacular and gloriously uncrowded, it offers expedition cruising of extraordinary scale and beauty.

The Kimberley coast is a labyrinth of dramatic sandstone cliffs, hidden gorges and countless islands, carved by some of the largest tides in the world. Its wonders include the spectacular Horizontal Falls, where tidal waters surge through narrow gorges, along with cascading waterfalls that tumble directly into the sea.

This is an ancient land, home to some of the oldest rock art on earth, created by Aboriginal peoples over tens of thousands of years, adding profound cultural depth to its natural grandeur. Crocodiles, whales and abundant birdlife inhabit its wild waters and shores.

Ashore, the region offers profound wilderness, ancient culture and breathtaking scenery, far from any trace of civilisation. Its scale and beauty are exceptional.

With its red-rock gorges, thundering waterfalls and ancient rock art, the Kimberley is one of the world’s great wildernesses. Guests can cruise a dramatic and remote coastline, witness spectacular tidal waterfalls and explore an ancient land of extraordinary natural and cultural richness.

The Kimberley Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in The Kimberley, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time to charter the Kimberley coast?

The dry season from May to September is by far the most popular window, with calm seas, clear skies and waterfalls still flowing strongly early in the season from the preceding wet. April and October can also work for experienced operators comfortable with a wider range of conditions, but the wet season from November to March brings monsoonal storms, cyclone risk and, in many places, closed or impassable river mouths, so almost all charters concentrate in the six drier months.

What's the nearest airport for a Kimberley charter?

Most charters start or end in Broome (BME), the Kimberley’s main western gateway with regular flights from Perth and other Australian capitals. Itineraries running the full length of the coast often finish instead at Wyndham or nearby Kununurra (KNX) in the east, roughly a thousand kilometres away by sea, so it is worth confirming which end of the coast a charter begins and ends before booking flights.

Where are the best anchorages along the Kimberley coast?

King George River offers a spectacular approach to the twin falls at its head, while Careening Bay combines a sheltered anchorage with the historic Mermaid boab tree ashore. Cyclone Creek, the calm inner arm of Talbot Bay, sits close enough to the Horizontal Falls to watch the tidal surge without riding through it, and Vansittart Bay, further north, offers good shelter along with a rarely visited World War Two aircraft wreck nearby.

How many days do you need to see the Kimberley properly?

Seven to ten days is the realistic minimum to cover a meaningful stretch of this coastline, given the distances involved between its main highlights. Guests with more time often extend to ten to fourteen days to cover the full run between Broome and the Kimberley’s eastern end near Wyndham, since the coastline’s scale, and the hours of cruising it takes to move between anchorages, rewards a slower itinerary than most other charter destinations.

Is it safe to swim off the boat in the Kimberley?

Not generally, and this should be treated seriously. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit the rivers, gorges and much of the coastline, and swimming from the yacht is not recommended anywhere without local, expert confirmation that a specific spot is genuinely clear. Onboard pools and a small number of ranger-verified freshwater sites well inland, such as Lake Argyle, are the safer alternative, and an experienced crew will always know which anchorages are appropriate for a swim.
