April, May, June and September offer the most comfortable weather for exploring both the city and the bay by tender, avoiding the intense August heat when much of Naples itself can feel subdued as locals head to the coast. Winter charters are possible but limited, since many bay-island facilities close outside the main season. The clear autumn light also makes for particularly good visibility at the Baia underwater park.
Naples Capodichino Airport (NAP) sits only a few kilometres from the city’s marinas, making it one of the most convenient starting points on the Italian coast, typically a fifteen to twenty minute transfer. It has extensive European connections and a growing number of long-haul routes. Guests combining Naples with the Amalfi Coast or Sicily often use it as the natural start or end point of a longer itinerary.
Marina Santa Lucia, beside the medieval Castel dell’Ovo in Borgo Marinari, puts guests within walking distance of the historic centre. Marechiaro, a fishing hamlet on the Posillipo coast, and the small volcanic islet of Nisida offer quieter alternatives just outside the main harbour. For something different, the underwater archaeological park at Baia lets guests anchor directly above a sunken Roman resort town, visible through the clear water below.
Three to four days cover the city, Pompeii and a day trip to Capri or Procida comfortably. Guests wanting to continue on to the Amalfi Coast or Ischia should plan for a week or more, since Naples works well as either a stand-alone city break or the starting point of a longer Bay of Naples itinerary. A single overnight is enough to see the historic centre’s main sights, though most guests prefer to stay longer for the food alone.
Booking ahead is strongly recommended rather than strictly required, since Pompeii’s archaeological park caps entries at 20,000 visitors a day, split into a morning and afternoon slot with timed admission. Tickets can be bought online through the official Pompeii Sites system, and arriving without one risks a long queue at the ticket office in peak season. Herculaneum, smaller and less visited, rarely requires the same advance planning.
