Nicaragua Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Nicaragua, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time to charter Nicaragua?

The dry season from November to April brings the most settled weather on both coasts, with the Pacific side around San Juan del Sur seeing the least rain and the clearest skies. The rainy season from May to October brings dramatic afternoon downpours but keeps the volcanic landscapes around Granada and Ometepe at their greenest and most photogenic.

How do we get to Nicaragua to start a charter?

Managua’s Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA) is the country’s main international gateway, convenient for the Pacific coast and Lake Nicaragua. Reaching the Corn Islands on the Caribbean side means a connecting flight to Corn Island Airport (RNI), served by La Costeña from Managua and Bluefields, since no international flights land there directly.

What are the best anchorages in Nicaragua?

San Juan del Sur’s horseshoe bay is the most sheltered stop on the Pacific coast, while Big Corn Island’s Brig Bay and the reef-fringed waters off Little Corn Island, reachable only by a short panga crossing, are the highlights on the Caribbean side. Las Isletas de Granada, on Lake Nicaragua itself, offer a very different, freshwater anchorage among 365 volcanic islets.

How many days do we need to see Nicaragua properly?

Seven to ten days allows time to combine the Pacific coast’s beaches and colonial towns with a crossing to the Corn Islands, though the distance between the two coasts means most itineraries lean toward one side or the other rather than splitting time evenly. A shorter four or five day trip works well focused entirely on San Juan del Sur, Granada and Ometepe.

What's different about Little Corn Island?

Little Corn Island has no cars, motorbikes or paved roads of any kind, just sandy footpaths threading between palm trees and small guesthouses, and the only way there is a 30 to 45 minute panga boat ride from its larger neighbour, Big Corn Island. That isolation has kept its fringing reef among the least-dived and best-preserved in the western Caribbean.
