Twenty knots at cruise and 25 at the top end put the 78 in genuine flagship territory.
Her semi-displacement hull carries a fine entry forward and a harder chine aft, the combination that lets a yacht this size settle onto the plane rather than simply push water aside. Twin MAN V12 diesels, each rated at 1,550hp, sit on floating mounts with an AquaDrive anti vibration system between engine and shaft, keeping noise and harshness out of the accommodation even at speed. True to Fleming form, she can run at normal cruising speeds on one engine alone, with a small rudder offset compensating for the asymmetric thrust, a genuine safety margin rather than a brochure claim. Range runs to 1,500 nautical miles, enough for a full Mediterranean season without chasing a fuel berth.
Her lines are drawn for efficiency first, and elegance follows naturally from it.
A bulbous bow smooths her passage through the water at speed, while a full length keel runs below the rudders, protecting them and adding directional stability offshore. Teak decks are standard rather than an option, laid across walk around decks with their own opening gates for safe movement forward. The Portuguese bridge, a walled, protected section ahead of the pilothouse, lets anyone step outside to con the boat into a marina without exposure to wind or spray. Low profile styling keeps her centre of gravity down and her silhouette lean for her size, a yacht that looks exactly as capable as she is.
Life on the 78 spreads naturally across three distinct decks, each with its own character.
The flying bridge works on two levels, an upper helm for running the boat and a lower deck built for entertaining, with a wet bar, barbecue, fridge, icemaker and freezer all close to hand. Below, a protected area on the lower deck carries its own dining table and settee, sheltered from sun and spray for breakfast or an evening drink. The boat deck carries a tender of up to sixteen feet, lifted clear by a hydraulic davit, while the main saloon and its dedicated dining area give the yacht a proper formal heart for evenings at anchor. Nothing here feels like an afterthought squeezed into leftover space.
The master suite sits amidships, full beam, exactly where the sea stays calmest underway.
Four ensuite cabins sleep eight guests in total, each finished to the same warm, traditional standard that runs through Fleming’s in-house interiors. The pilothouse is kept deliberately separate from the living accommodation, with twin Stidd helm seats, a dedicated chart table, a day head and a pilot berth for whoever stands watch overnight. Crew live apart too, with their own quarters aft for two, a private entrance, and a small galley and mess of their own, so the working side of the yacht never intrudes on family or guests. It is a layout built around genuine long range cruising, not a weekend at the dock.
Few yachts this size carry the sheer redundancy built into the Fleming 78.
She measures 24 metres on a 6.4 metre beam, drawing 1.6 metres, with twin 32kW generators, a watermaker producing nearly 7,000 litres a day and a Boening monitoring system watching more than 150 points across the yacht from five dedicated screens. Stabilisers work both at rest and underway, keeping her settled whether at anchor or making way. She is the product of twenty five years of continuous refinement from Tony Fleming’s original design, built to the same hand laid fibreglass standard throughout the range. For an owner who wants flagship scale and systems without stepping outside Fleming’s own passagemaking philosophy, the 78 is the natural next step up.
