Forty knots from a boat you can tow behind a family car is no small thing.
The SPX 230 comes standard with a MerCruiser 4.5 litre MPI ECT sterndrive, driving through an Alpha I leg for light, direct steering at speed. Owners who want more top end can step up to the 6.2 litre MPI ECT paired with a Bravo III duo prop leg, built for stronger acceleration out of the hole and a flatter run at cruise. On the standard set up she cruises at a comfortable 30 knots and tops out at 40, with 189 litres of fuel giving a real world range of about 160 nautical miles, enough for a full day of towing, swimming and running between anchorages without a thought for the tank.

A stout, raked windshield cuts wind noise at speed and gives the driver a clean sightline to the inset multifunction display. An optional tower sits ready for wakeboard or waterski lines, while moulded nonslip sections across the aft gunwales and ahead of the windshield make boarding and moving around underway properly secure, not just decorative. The bow cockpit is cut generously enough for real legroom, with forward facing backrests rather than the token perch some 23 foot bowriders settle for. Sea Ray’s in-house design team drew every line and every engineering detail in-house too, so the hull, the deck mouldings and the running gear were developed as one package rather than assembled from parts.

Bench seating runs along the starboard side of the cockpit and across the transom, backed by proper bucket seats for the driver and passenger, the captain’s chair fitted with a flip up bolster for standing at speed. Two large in-sole ski lockers swallow lines, fenders and water toys, and a further storage bay sits under the aft sun pad, exactly where a sterndrive or inboard would normally occupy the space. The port console conceals a changing room, with a portable toilet available as an option for longer days away from a marina. It is a cockpit built around actual use, not a showroom walk through.

Forward, the bow cockpit is for lounging and arriving, with proper backrests and legroom rather than a flat sun pad. Amidships, the helm and companion seats handle the business of running the boat, with clear sightlines and simple controls. Aft, the transom bench and sun pad convert the cockpit into a swim and ski platform, with the storage beneath keeping gear out from underfoot. A 0.9 metre draught keeps the shallow approach to a beach or a sandbank open to her, where deeper sterndrives would have to anchor off and swim in. It is a short boat that uses every metre of her 2.6 metre beam with intent.
