Fifty knots on outboards is not a subtle statement.
Twin Mercury Verado V10 outboards, rated at 425 horsepower apiece, are standard, with a step up to twin Mercury Racing V8 500R units available for owners chasing the very top of the range. Cruise sits comfortably at 34 knots, and a generous 2,800 litre fuel capacity stretches the range out to 360 nautical miles, unusually long for a boat built primarily for speed. Joystick piloting and a digital anchoring system take the difficulty out of close quarters manoeuvring and holding station, so the performance never comes at the cost of everyday usability.
The windshield alone tells you what kind of boat this is.
A geometric, venturi shaped screen wraps the helm in a shape closer to an aircraft canopy than a conventional windscreen, and a fixed skylight hardtop lets light into the cockpit without a soft top to stow. Aft, the transom is split to carry the outboards, and gunwale wings on either side fold flat once she is stopped or at anchor, widening the working deck considerably. An extendable teak passerelle doubles as a swimmer’s ladder, a small but telling detail in a design where almost every fixed feature is asked to do two jobs.
Below the helm, the 48X still finds room to slow down.
A console cabin offers close to two metres of headroom along with a small galley, settee and television, a double berth and a head with a shower, enough for an owner and guest to stay aboard comfortably. On deck, large sunpads occupy both the bow and the aft cockpit, and a teak dining table with settees and an integrated wet bar handle everything from a quick lunch to a full evening at anchor for the twelve guests she can carry by day. It is a boat built to switch between flat out running and lingering at anchor without compromising either.
Speed and range rarely arrive together. The 48X manages both.
A 2,800 litre fuel capacity is unusually large for a 15 metre outboard powered tender, and it delivers a genuine 360 nautical mile range at her 34 knot cruise, enough to cover serious distances between anchorages without refuelling. A shallow 1.2 metre draught, on a 4.4 metre beam, keeps the shallower bays and beaches within reach even when the mother yacht cannot follow. It is this combination, real range alongside real speed, that separates the 48X from a boat built only to post a big number on the spec sheet.
At 1,200,000 euros new, the 48X sits between her siblings on price as well as performance.
She measures 15 metres in length on a 4.4 metre beam and displaces 11.5 tonnes, with naval architecture, exterior and interior design and engineering all handled in-house by Wally’s own team. Alongside the pod driven 48 Wallytender and the shorter 43 Wallytender X, she completes a trio built around one philosophy expressed at three different speeds and displacements. For an owner prioritising outright pace and range over the last word in refinement, the 48X is the quickest route into the range.
