Flores is best cruised in the dry season, roughly April to October, when steady southeast trade winds keep the water calm for daily runs along the coast; late September into early October often brings the clearest skies with fewer boats around. The wet season, December to February, brings squally weather and choppier crossings, though it coincides with strong manta ray aggregations at nearby Komodo dive sites for guests willing to trade comfort for wildlife.
Most charters fly into Komodo International Airport (LBJ) at Labuan Bajo, Flores’ main gateway with regular domestic connections and a growing number of international routes. If Kelimutu’s crater lakes are on the itinerary, Ende Airport (ENE) on the south coast is far more practical, putting guests within a two-hour drive of Moni village and the trailhead up to the crater rim.
Kanawa Island and Waecicu Bay, both a short run from Labuan Bajo, offer sheltered, sandy-bottomed anchorages close to good snorkelling reefs, while Sebayur Besar and Seraya Kecil sit further out toward Komodo National Park’s more current-swept dive sites. Most captains base out of Labuan Bajo itself and day-hop between these islands, returning to the harbour’s more protected water overnight.
Three to four days covers the essentials near Labuan Bajo: a couple of islands for swimming and snorkelling, a Komodo dragon trek, and a sunset or two over the harbour. Guests wanting to reach Flores’ interior, particularly Kelimutu’s crater lakes or the highland villages around Bajawa, should budget five to seven days, since those detours involve long overland legs or a separate flight.
Not easily as a day trip. Kelimutu sits on the opposite side of Flores from Labuan Bajo, and the overland drive runs ten to twelve hours each way through mountainous terrain. The practical route is a short flight from Labuan Bajo to Ende, followed by a two-hour drive to Moni village, then a predawn walk to the crater rim before the clouds close in. Most captains treat it as a dedicated extension rather than a side trip.
