Bequia Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Bequia, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time to charter around Bequia?

December through June brings the most reliable trade winds and driest weather, with the Grenadines’ steady easterlies making for excellent sailing between Bequia and its neighbouring cays. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June to November, and while Bequia sits far enough south to avoid the worst of it, most charter yachts still plan around it. The island’s Easter Regatta, usually held over the Easter weekend in March or April, is one of the liveliest times to visit Admiralty Bay.

How do you get to Bequia?

Bequia’s own J.F. Mitchell Airport (BQU) receives short-hop flights from Barbados and St Vincent, though its single runway limits it to smaller aircraft. Most guests instead fly into Argyle International Airport (SVD) on St Vincent and take a 60-to-90-minute ferry or a short charter-boat transfer across the channel to Admiralty Bay. Bequia has no direct international flights of its own, keeping the island considerably quieter than better-connected islands nearby.

Which bay is best for an overnight stop at Bequia?

Admiralty Bay is the natural choice, sheltered nearly all the way around and close enough to Port Elizabeth for dinner ashore or a stroll along the Belmont Walkway. Princess Margaret Beach and Lower Bay, both a short walk or dinghy ride from the main harbour, offer calmer swimming and a quieter overnight setting. Friendship Bay, on the more exposed south coast, suits a daytime stop better than an overnight one when the trade winds are up.

How long should we spend at Bequia?

Two to three nights let guests properly enjoy Admiralty Bay, walk out to Princess Margaret Beach and Lower Bay, and take in the model boat shops and fish market in Port Elizabeth. As the natural gateway to the Grenadines, Bequia also works well as the starting point for a longer week combining Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau and the Tobago Cays further south.

Is Bequia a port of entry for clearing customs in the Grenadines?

Yes. Port Elizabeth is an official port of entry for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, with a customs and immigration office on the waterfront a short dinghy ride from most anchorage spots in Admiralty Bay. This makes Bequia a convenient first or last stop for yachts arriving from Saint Lucia, Martinique or further north, sparing guests a detour to the customs office on St Vincent itself before continuing south through the Grenadines.
