The Sporades are an exceptional setting for classic yacht charter. The combination of consistent northerly winds, pine-forested anchorages and relatively light traffic outside July and August makes the island group one of the most sympathetic cruising grounds in the Aegean for traditional vessels. A classic ketch or wooden schooner at anchor in Panormos Bay on Skopelos, with the pines running down to the water, is one of the defining images of Greek island sailing.
The Greek classic fleet numbers around eight vessels at any given time, a combination of carefully restored wooden schooners, motor sailers from the 1960s and 1970s, and purpose-built traditional gulets that carry the same character. All are crewed, all are actively maintained, and the best examples are genuinely rare charter opportunities.
Weekly charter rates for classic vessels in Greece start at around 20,000 euros and reach 100,000 euros for the largest and most celebrated yachts, with an advance provisioning allowance of approximately 30 percent. Classic yachts in the Sporades often include a naturalist or dive guide on longer itineraries, suited to the marine park waters around Alonnisos.
The sailing conditions in the Sporades suit classic hulls well. The meltemi builds gradually through the morning rather than arriving suddenly, giving time to set sail and adjust before the wind fills in, and the protected passages between islands keep sea states manageable even on higher-wind days.
