Capri has drawn artists, writers and sailors since the nineteenth century, and Anacapri, the quieter upper village above the island main town, retains something of that earlier atmosphere. Axel Munthe built Villa San Michele on the Anacapri hillside; the villa garden still looks across the same Tyrrhenian view that persuaded him to stay. Three classic yachts in the Italian charter fleet can be chartered around Capri and the Gulf of Naples, from restored wooden schooners to post-war ketches with established Mediterranean track records. These vessels arrive at Capri in the manner they were built for: under sail, from the open sea, with the island rising ahead. The Blue Grotto, the Faraglioni sea stacks and the clifftop views from Anacapri remain unchanged from when the same passage was made under traditional rig a century ago.
Charter rates for classic yachts around Anacapri and the Capri waters range from 85,000 to 245,000 euros per week, with some particularly notable vessels asking more at peak season. The advance provisioning allowance of around 30 percent covers fuel, provisions and port costs. Availability of classic yachts is limited across the Mediterranean and early booking for July and August dates is recommended without exception.
An itinerary centred on Anacapri extends naturally to the Amalfi coast, Ischia and Procida, all within a comfortable day sail. Two weeks opens the possibility of reaching the Aeolian Islands to the south, adding offshore miles to the coastal passage that makes up the first week.
