Arriving in Venice aboard a classic yacht is the most fitting introduction to a city that has itself been preserved as though time stopped at the height of the Republic. Classic charter yachts, built or rigorously restored between the 1930s and 1980s, carry the same craftsmanship in teak, varnish and brass that defines Venice’s own palazzo interiors. A week aboard a classic ketch or motorsailer, exploring the Lagoon and then pushing east into Croatian waters, offers a kind of luxury that no modern build quite replicates.
The classic fleet available for charter in Italian waters runs from 20 to 45 metres. Most carry four to eight guests in three or four cabins. Crews of three to five are the norm, and on sailing classics the captain is often deeply knowledgeable about the Adriatic’s winds and the history of the coasts he sails. Unlike motor yachts, classics impose a pace on the itinerary that encourages lingering.
Weekly rates for classic yachts chartering in the Venice area range from around 20,000 euros for a 20-metre motorsailer to 100,000 euros for a restored 45-metre ketch. Budget a further 30 percent as the advance provisioning allowance, which covers food, fuel, berthing and provisions. July and August are high season; June and September offer better rates and quieter anchorages on the Istrian coast.
From Venice, classic itineraries typically follow the coast of Istria to the harbour of Rovinj, one of the most photographed fishing towns on the Adriatic, before choosing between a long passage south to Dubrovnik or a more relaxed week threading back through the Croatian islands.
