Sailing Vietnam requires patience and planning, but the rewards justify both. Ha Long Bay’s limestone karst provides some of the most striking sailing scenery in Asia, and the seasonal winds of the Gulf of Tonkin give reliable conditions for passages across the bay’s open sections from October through April. Further south, the South China Sea coast between Da Nang and Phu Quoc offers a different kind of sailing, more exposed and more dependent on weather windows, but uncrowded and increasingly rewarding as the charter infrastructure develops.
The sailing fleet in Vietnam is centred on Ha Long Bay and Nha Trang, with a small number of vessels operating from Phu Quoc in the south. Vessels range from traditional-style wooden junk rigs built for the bay’s aesthetic to modern blue-water cruising monohulls more suited to coastal passages. Crew experience varies: the most experienced captains in Ha Long Bay have often been sailing these waters for decades and know the anchorages beyond the main tourist circuit in detail.
Charter rates for Vietnam sailing yachts start from around 10,000 euros per week for smaller vessels and reach 50,000 euros for larger, more capable yachts. The advance provisioning allowance adds approximately 30 percent for fuel, food and crew gratuity. The northeast monsoon season, October to April, provides the most consistent sailing conditions in the north. Southern Vietnam sailing is best from November to May.
The culinary dimension of a Vietnam sailing charter is worth noting. Fresh seafood, banh mi prepared aboard, Vietnamese coffee at anchor and menus that draw directly on local markets make the provisioning experience genuinely distinctive.
