December through April brings the driest, breeziest weather and is the island’s high season, with daytime temperatures around 27 to 29 degrees Celsius and steady trade winds ideal for sailing. Hurricane season runs June to November. Late April is worth building the calendar around rather than avoiding: it coincides with Antigua Sailing Week, one of the Caribbean’s biggest regattas, when the island is at its busiest and most social, though berths and villas book out well ahead.
V.C. Bird International Airport (ANU), just outside St John’s, is Antigua’s main gateway and takes direct flights from several US and UK cities as well as regional connections across the Caribbean. It is one of the few islands in the Leeward chain with genuine long-haul direct service, which makes it a practical embarkation point for a charter rather than requiring a connection through a hub island. Barbuda has its own small airstrip for the short hop over from Antigua.
English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour anchor the south coast, both well protected and close to restaurants, chandleries and Nelson’s Dockyard itself. Nonsuch Bay, on the calmer east coast behind a barrier reef, offers flatter water for swimming and kite surfing. Deep Bay, near St John’s, sits beside a sunken 19th-century wreck close enough to shore for a quick snorkel. For a complete change of scene, Low Bay on Barbuda’s west coast gives miles of pink-tinged sand with almost no other boats around.
Five to seven days works well: three or four around Antigua’s south coast harbours and beaches, plus a day or two sailing or flying over to Barbuda for its lagoon and pink sand beach. Antigua alone rewards a slower pace given how many distinct bays sit within a short sail of each other, so guests short on time often prioritise English Harbour, Half Moon Bay and one Barbuda day trip rather than trying to circle the whole island.
Yes, and most charter guests treat it as the trip’s contrast day. Barbuda has roughly a tenth of Antigua’s population, almost no development along its west coast, and the Frigate Bird Sanctuary at Codrington Lagoon, one of the largest colonies of magnificent frigatebirds in the world, reachable by a short boat trip through the mangroves. The crossing from Antigua takes under two hours by yacht in good conditions, or about fifteen minutes by the small interisland flight if time is tight.
