Whitsundays Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Whitsundays, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time of year to charter in the Whitsundays?

The dry season from May to September is peak season, with mild days, low humidity and the Great Barrier Reef at its clearest for snorkelling and diving. Steady south-easterly trade winds through June to August also make for the best sailing breeze. The wetter, warmer months from November to April bring occasional cyclones and a higher chance of marine stingers close to the mainland, though the outer islands and reef remain largely unaffected.

What's the closest airport for a Whitsundays charter?

Hamilton Island Airport (HTI) is the most convenient option, with direct flights from Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Cairns landing a short tender ride from the marina. Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP), 14 kilometres south of Proserpine, serves the mainland gateway of Airlie Beach and connects via regional flights from Brisbane. Which to use largely depends on where the charter begins and ends, since guests can embark from either Hamilton Island or Airlie Beach.

Which anchorages shouldn't we miss?

Cid Harbour on Whitsunday Island is the classic overnight stop, well protected and close to the Whitsunday Cairn walking track. Nara Inlet on Hook Island combines shelter with a short dinghy trip to 2,000-year-old Ngaro rock art, and Chalkies Beach on Haslewood Island offers some of the whitest sand outside Whitehaven itself. Border Island’s Cateran Bay rounds out a well-balanced itinerary with some of the archipelago’s healthiest fringing coral.

How many days should we plan for a Whitsundays charter?

Five to seven days is the sweet spot, long enough to combine several sheltered island anchorages with at least one full day out on the outer reef at Hardy Reef or Bait Reef. Because passages between islands are short, even a four-day charter can cover the highlights, including Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. Guests wanting to add a Cairns or Port Douglas extension for the northern reef should allow ten days or more.

Is there a good time to combine a charter with Hamilton Island Race Week?

Hamilton Island Race Week runs every August, first held in 1984 and now Australia’s largest offshore regatta, drawing around 250 boats to the waters around Hamilton Island for a week of racing and shoreside parties. Chartering during the event puts guests in the middle of the action, though marina berths and anchorages fill quickly and should be booked well ahead. Outside race week, August still offers the most reliable trade winds of the year.
