Eleuthera Superyacht Charter

Eleuthera is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt of the Bahamian islands, a long, slender ribbon of land famous for its dramatic pink-sand beaches and clear turquoise water. Peaceful, scenic and refreshingly undeveloped, it offers a wonderful taste of the natural beauty and relaxed charm of the out islands.

The island is celebrated above all for its pink beaches, whose delicate rose-tinted sand, coloured by tiny coral fragments, stretches for miles along the Atlantic shore. Elsewhere, dramatic bluffs, hidden coves and the famous Glass Window Bridge, where the deep blue Atlantic meets the turquoise bank, create striking natural scenery.

Eleuthera’s clear water and vibrant reefs are superb for swimming, snorkelling and diving, while charming settlements and pineapple farms reflect a gentle, traditional way of life. Sheltered anchorages and quiet beaches abound along its beautiful coast.

Ashore, the island offers fresh seafood, colourful local settlements and a warm, unhurried atmosphere, a world away from the busier resorts. Its natural beauty and tranquillity are exceptional.

With its pink-sand beaches, dramatic scenery and clear water, Eleuthera is a jewel of the Bahamas. Guests can relax on rose-tinted shores, snorkel vibrant reefs and enjoy the unspoilt beauty and gentle charm of this beautiful out island.

Eleuthera Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Eleuthera, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time to charter around Eleuthera?

December through April brings the driest weather and the calmest crossing of the Bight of Eleuthera, while the Atlantic side stays livelier with surf, drawing visitors to Gregory Town through the winter months. Hurricane season runs June through November, and Eleuthera’s long, narrow shape leaves it with little natural shelter from a direct hit, unlike more sheltered anchorages further into the island chain. May and June typically offer a quieter, settled window before the summer heat builds.

How do you fly in to Eleuthera?

Eleuthera has three small airports rather than one main hub: North Eleuthera (ELH) serves the northern end and Harbour Island, Governor’s Harbour (GHB) sits central, and Rock Sound (RSD) covers the south. Most scheduled flights connect through Nassau, a short hop of well under an hour, and which airport to use depends entirely on where along this hundred-mile-long island a charter itinerary begins. Guests joining a yacht mid-cruise often fly into whichever strip is closest to the boat’s current anchorage.

Which anchorage works best for an overnight stop at Eleuthera?

Hatchet Bay, entered through a narrow cut blasted by hand through the reef after the First World War, is often rated one of the safest natural harbours anywhere in the Bahamas and a reliable choice in almost any weather. Governor’s Harbour and Rock Sound both offer good holding close to provisions and restaurants ashore. The exposed Atlantic coast around Gregory Town, by contrast, is better suited to a daytime stop than an overnight unless conditions are unusually calm.

How many days should we plan for Eleuthera?

Two to three nights let guests move between the island’s very different personalities: a swim at French Leave Beach or Winding Bay, a look at the Glass Window Bridge, and a quieter stop at Hatchet Bay or Rock Sound. Because Eleuthera stretches over a hundred miles from tip to tip with no single centre, it rewards a slower pace than more compact islands, and pairs naturally with a call at neighbouring Harbour Island or Spanish Wells at the northern end.

Why is Eleuthera considered the birthplace of the Bahamas?

In 1648, English Puritans from Bermuda known as the Eleutheran Adventurers, led by Captain William Sayle, sailed in search of religious freedom and wrecked on the island’s reefs, later sheltering at what is now called Preacher’s Cave near the northern tip. Their settlement struggled and mostly scattered within a few years, but they gave the island its name, from the Greek word for freedom, and are regarded as the first permanent European settlers in the Bahamas. Preacher’s Cave can still be visited today near North Eleuthera Airport.
