Compass Cay Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Compass Cay, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time to visit Compass Cay?

March through July generally brings the calmest water and the best visibility for swimming with the nurse sharks and snorkelling the surrounding flats, while the winter northers of December through February can push enough swell into the marina to make its open dockage uncomfortable. Summer stays warm but overlaps with hurricane season, so most charter itineraries build in flexibility around the forecast when this stop is on the route.

How do you get to Compass Cay?

Compass Cay has no scheduled ferry or commercial flights of its own; a private sand airstrip exists but is usable only around low tide, so almost everyone arrives by boat. The nearest regular airport is Staniel Cay, a short cruise to the south, which most charter guests use to join or leave a yacht already under way through the Exumas.

Where should we tie up or anchor at Compass Cay?

Compass Cay Marina, inside one of the best-protected natural harbours in the Exumas, is the obvious choice for an overnight stay and gives direct access to the nurse shark encounter at the docks. Guests wanting a quieter alternative can anchor off Crescent Beach or Pirate Trap Beach in settled conditions, both a short tender ride from the marina itself.

How many days are worth spending at Compass Cay?

A single night or even a few hours is enough for most guests to swim with the sharks, walk to Compass Peak and enjoy one of the beaches, since the cay is small and largely undeveloped beyond the marina. It combines naturally with a longer stop further north in the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park or south toward Staniel Cay.

Is it safe to swim with the nurse sharks at Compass Cay?

Yes, when done as the marina intends: the sharks gathered at the docks are accustomed to people and generally docile, feeding along the bottom rather than showing any interest in swimmers. Guests are asked to wade rather than swim aggressively, avoid grabbing the sharks, and follow the dock staff’s guidance, particularly with children, since a nurse shark’s bite, while rare, is still a wild animal’s.
