The Dalmatian season runs May to October, with June and September the most comfortable months for warm water without peak crowds. July and August bring the liveliest atmosphere, including the traditional Moreška sword dance performed in the old town.
Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) is the usual gateway, around two to two and a half hours by road and ferry, with Split Airport (SPU) a similar distance in the other direction. A small airport at Vela Luka offers limited seasonal flights. Most charters reach the island by sea as part of a wider Dalmatian route.
The town harbour sits right beneath the old town walls, while Lumbarda to the east offers easier holding and sandy beaches. Vela Luka provides shelter at the western end, and Pupnatska Luka on the south coast stays quiet even in season.
One to two days suits Korčula well, enough for the old town, a vineyard visit and a swim at Lumbarda. It sits naturally within a wider central or south Dalmatian route alongside Hvar, the Pelješac peninsula, Mljet and Dubrovnik.
Easily. Family cellars around Lumbarda and Čara, a short drive or taxi from the harbour, welcome visitors for a tasting of Pošip and Grk, two white wines found almost nowhere outside the island. Many can be arranged for the same afternoon with a little notice.
