June through September offers the calmest seas and warmest water for swimming and snorkelling, with July and August drawing the biggest crowds of Roman holidaymakers to the harbour. May and late September provide a quieter alternative with fewer boats in the anchorages, though ferry and hydrofoil schedules to the mainland thin out noticeably once the summer season ends.
Ponza has no airport, so guests typically fly into Rome Fiumicino or Naples and then travel by ferry or hydrofoil from Anzio, Formia or Terracina on the mainland, a crossing of roughly one to two hours depending on the port and boat speed. A seasonal helicopter transfer is also sometimes available for guests short on time.
Cala Feola and Frontone Bay on the calmer eastern side offer easy, sheltered anchoring close to the harbour town, while Chiaia di Luna’s dramatic cliff-backed beach suits a daytime stop given its restricted land access. Serious cruising guests also make the short crossing to Palmarola’s Cala del Porto, generally considered the most scenic anchorage in the whole archipelago.
Two to three days is enough to explore Ponza’s own coastline, visit the Grotte di Pilato and spend an afternoon on Palmarola, making it a natural stop within a longer Tyrrhenian itinerary between Rome and Naples. Guests with more time often add the smaller, largely uninhabited island of Zannone nearby for a quieter final day.
Most guests who make the crossing say yes: Palmarola has no roads, no real village and no overnight facilities beyond a single summer restaurant, but its jagged volcanic pinnacles and empty coves are considered by many to be more dramatic than Ponza’s own coastline. The forty-minute tender ride each way is the main trade-off, so it suits an itinerary with a free, calm-weather day to spare.
